I'm not trying to hijack the thread. But, I have a related issue and I don't feel it's worthy of its own thread ... maybe it is?
I sometimes like to play mp3s through Radio 10 from my notebook, which has a high end sound card. Everything is hunky dory That is, while the notebook is on battery power. If I attempt to power the notebook via power inverter I get noise from the car's electrical system (ignition) over the speakers. The notebook has two internal batteries and can run off of them for something like 5 hours. But, is there an induction filter or something which would allow the use of the power inverter for long trips? I asked at Radio Shack, and the employee there did a good impersonation of a 1950s Sci-Fi computer given a paradox to analyze.

P.S. No problem with volume using the notebook.

I believe the one I'm using cost nearly twice that much. I wouldn't call it a crappy cable. Perhaps it is possible to spend $20 on a simple cable, but since it sounds just FINE while running on battery power, I doubt this is the solution.

EDIT: I assumed Napoleon12's response was to me. If I was mistaken, I apologize.

fmaxwell is correct; the proper approach is to buy a cable to connect the ipod's dock connector to the smart radio's aux input, not the ipod's headphone jack to the aux input jack. There's no need to increase the volume on your ipod if you do that; the radio's volume control will be the only volume control necessary. In fact, if you connect via the ipod's dock, your ipod's volume control will have NO effect on the radio's volume (e.g., you can set the ipod at minimum volume and you'll hear the songs the same as when you turn the ipod volume up to max).

Ipod using aux jack solution

I use a Belkin iPod Adapter that has a docking connector that connects to a lighter adapter power source and has a built in amp. This thing works great. In fact I use one in the Smart and another in our other car. You plug your wire from the auxiliary jack into the power unit. There is a "vol" dial on the adapter to adjust the amp out volume.

Do a search under Belkin iPod adapter amp you should be able to find one easy.

(That'll also mean that the smart is great in the snow... really hoping so!) Otherwise, I may use a Christmas present (I always get Best Buy gift certificates) to change the speakers.
Just got the speakers (best buy won't put them in...) and a boostaroo.... and dynamat.

Smart is good in the snow, The neon is still in the family and all is pretty ok.
