Boss Bass 600 Mounting?

Hi All,
I've had my Boss Bass 600 for a while and its been great. However, shortly after getting it the velcro stickers keeping it attached to the back "wall" behind the seat became attached, and it has been loose since. For the most part that's been OK, except for when I have gone around a turn sharply and the bass box shifts and vibrates against the seat rail. Last night, however, I noticed my bass start to get distorted. Upon further investigation I found that having it loose has been damaging the speaker wire going into it. I'd really like to find a way to snugly mount it so it does not move around.

Does anyone have a pic on how they have mounted theirs? I'd rather do it some way without drilling holes into my car, but if necessary I can do that too.

Thanks
Carl

cut a board. any wood will do but i like me some mdf. cut it a bit bigger than the boss. put it behind the carpet. screw the boss into it. you dont have to screw the wood to the car. it will hold up. have done a ton of amps behind the seats in smarts like this with no prob.

Ah behind the carpet--good idea. How do you easily get behind the carpet? I suppose you can lift it up from where you access the engine compartment?

Thanks
Carl

I'm curious about this too. I've been working on figuring out what I want in the way of an upgraded sound system, and am leaning heavily towards the boss bass 600. I dont want to cut the carpet, but I'd be willing to put a couple screws through it.

I had a look at the back of the car and I can't really figure out an easy way to lift the carpet behind the back seat. Its sort of pinned down just above the engine compartment. I might get some plywood and then wrap that in carpet and just screw it into that. If I can get the plywood the right size I can wedge it in the space and hopefully it wouldnt move around. Any pics would be helpful if someone has successfully mounted one of these puppies.

boss bass 600 under dash

Hey carl242 or anyone with the boss bass 600 could you see if it can fit up under the dash nicely? I'm thinking of putting it there and making brackets to hold it just need to know if it can fit before buying one. I fingure its lighter then the 8inch sub system and the wife dosen't care about that much bass.
I almost install one of those Plasma/LCD bar speaker systems behind the seat still might. to bring out the mids/highs.
Thanks James

Perhaps Napoleon meant resting the wood base behind the seat on the carpet.
I would not feel comfortable cutting any carpet in that area because of introducing more engine noise and when resale time comes and the woofer is to be removed, it would look bad.
My method doesn't require any holes into the vehicle and besides the heat generated by the amp should dissipate as fast as possible.
I used the two rear buttonhead Torx screws that hold the driver's seat down as my anchor.
I cut two aluminum angles 1 1/4"x 1 1/4"x 1/8" thick x 1 3/8" wide that fits just right between the two vertical walls that compose the sliding tracks of the seat. The angles were cut just wide enough to fit in the confines of the space which is about 1 7/16".
From this point on I want to say how it how the job should continue and not what was done by me. After the two angles are in place with the screws loosely tightened you wind up with two parallel vertical pieces.
Then two more same size angles are cut and placed on the 1st angles forming an S. Now the two new angles each, are held vertically against the inside vertical of the original angles with the legs facing the rear of the car. We have not drilled and screwed these two angles together yet. This is only for illustration purposes. The two remaining legs that are horizontal and facing the motor can now be joined by one long 17 1/2- 18" angle of the same material. The angle that is going across the two seat tracks is high enough so that a wooden base of choice can rest on it and remain there laying on the angled carpet. As I've stated, putting screws in to hold the components can be done by any one that's not mechanically declined.
I went much further here because I have a shop for my disposal.
I can't offer photos because my mounting continues on to the nth degree.
I just hope I could enlighten anyone with my explanation. If not send me a pm

I've had a few more thoughts about this since last posting. I think I see the way I will be proceeding, and am likely to order a Boss Bass 600 before the day is out.

I went and visited John H today (very nice fellow by the way), and not only got to check out his car a bit to get a better idea what audio options I want, but also got to have a look at what a stock subwoofer is like, as well as it's connector.

I am going to see if I cant source the female receptacle that is on the factory sub. If I can find it, I should be able to whip up a mini harness to allow for VERY easy installation of the boss bass behind the seat. No need to do any splicing under the seat, just plug and play operation.

For securing it behind the driver's seat, I plan to pick up a 3/8" square of plywood or whatever, partially carpet it, and have the back side a solid sheet of velcro. Then I can screw the boss bass directly to that board (does it have anywhere to do that directly, or will I need to fashion brackets?) and the board should offer plenty of surface area to not go anywhere when stuck behind the seat with velcro.

This will effectively make the entire unit completely plug and play. All it would even take to remove it would be unplugging one plug, and peeling the velcro mount board off of the carpeting. I'm thinking I might attach the little control pod underneath the driver's seat, facing forwards. I expect I will likely never need to operate it once I've got it dialed in, and if the LED is indeed that bright, it might even make for a bit of foot well illumination at night time.

If I do indeed find the receptacle for the factory sub, and make up a little wiring harness, everyone can be assured I will take pictures and document my work. I'm certain I'm not the only one interested in this sort of setup.

The carpet is one component of the velcro and by stapling the other part on the plywood plate you now have a solid connection to the angled part of the car.
Now... the woofer's box must be connected to the board.
If you take a long aluminum angle that you can screw it in place horizontally near the bottom* across the board, you will have now have a stop for the box.
The woofer box is quite heavy and it will in time want to slide down.
There are no threaded connections that I remember on the box except for the very small threaded holes designed for the large corner rubber bumpers.
I used these to hold my aluminum angles.
In your case may I suggest to put the rubber protection bumper on permanently on all 4 corners and let the bumpers rest on that angle.
I mounted my box with all the connections facing the driver's side. This way I could adjust the controls from the center while sitting in the driver's seat.
I also placed my control behind the driver's seat near the subwoofer for several weeks, until I got sick and tired of unsuccessfully reaching behind me and feeling for the knob.
So I moved the control on the vertical outside wall of the left cuby hole where the control can be easily reached and the blue light's illuminance doesn't interfere. There it is blocked by the steering wheel because it is unpleasantly bright at night.
I adjust the control almost daily switching back and forth from AM talk to music. I thought once it's set I'll never adjust it again and that didn't work out for me..
If I could do the whole thing again I would reevaluate it all and place it under the passenger seat with 4 small spacers that raise the seat a just enough. That's where the velcro does the job best. No stress.
Yet one needs 4 longer Buttonhead Torx screws.

* I made sure that the seat can go back all the way without the box touching the back so variations in height were addressed until a good compromise was found. You don't want the board and box too high were it will above the horizontal engine cover, in case a large item is ever loaded in the smart for transport and also exposing it more to prying eyes.

So, my Boss arrived yesterday. That thing is a bit bigger than I'd envisioned!

I think I am reevaluating how I will be setting this up. I now plan to start out with just velcro. I picked up some industrial adhesive velcro that I suspect should hold better than what was included. I spent a while trying to find the darn sub connection under the carpet last night, to no avail. I had hoped to avoid removing the seat, but I might have to anyway. I'll give it another go this evening.

I also plan to put mine with the connections towards the door and the adjustments in the middle of the car. There is a bit of an indent in the vertical wall that it fits into pretty much perfectly like that.

I am however wondering if I may have to change tact on my plans for wiring. I had originally planned to use all of the wires from the factory sub plug, including the power and ground, as the factory setup was amplified. Thinking about it more, I'm going to bet once I dig up that plug, I'm going to find that they didnt use that heavy of a gauge of wire... Anyone have any input on this? Otherwise I'm going to need to see what I can do about running a power wire from behind the drivers seat over to the battery. I had been really hoping to avoid tearing up the carpet...

Oh yeah, on that note, no luck whatsoever in sourcing the factory plug. But if the power wiring isnt heavy enough, I guess a 'plug-and-play' solution couldnt worked out anyway.
