Very interesting project; worth reading the posts on clubsmartcar if you want to do something similar. Personally, a portable GPS and suction cup mount will do me fine (plus it can be moved around among cars.) Will have to check out the smart sound system in person before deciding if upgrading is worth it.
That's the kind of GPS I was hoping for from Smart
That kind of unit was what I was hoping Smart would install in the 451, since many of the Japanese manufacturers are starting to include in the dash units. I think they call less attention to themselves and are more difficult to 'snatch'. I know they cannot be moved from vehicle to vehicle that way, but it may also mean you are more likely to have it with you when you need it.
I have a OEM Navi in my Honda Pilot and a portable Garmin, I like both but OEM is nice since you do not have to worry about power wires hanging all over the place, thats my biggest gripe. Also I feel that I need to remove the portable form the dash suction cup so that its not tempting to a thief.
Heh, I'm going to need to upgrade my alternator when I get through with this thing (kidding..). I plan on hard wiring a USB/power cable for my GPS, hard wiring my XM, a set of ballasts for xenon lights.. etc

Sometime back my local newspaper ran an article about the theft of portable GPS navigators. Leaving the unit attached is an obvious invitation for a break-in, as is leaving the suction cup mount in place. Even if both are removed, thieves look for the telltale suction cup ring left on the glass and presume the unit is somewhere in the car and out of sight. The thief will likely do considerable damage during the break-in and ransacking the car, whether the unit is actually in the car or not.
