(DIY) Pioneer 90BT install

Saturday I installed my system finally. It is not FULLY complete, I did not drill my holes thru the glove box or take out the audio jack that smart provides yet. But here is my install.

Prep time: 20 min to hook the wires together.
Total install: 2 1/2 hrs. Took my time to make sure it was right.

Box that the radio came in and had the 2.0 update:

RCA Harness:

Power/speakers/brake and other wired part of harness:

GPS/IPOD/smart adapter harness.

Pioneer 90BT with smart adapter shroud installed and ready for install. Notice the USB cable taped to the top. Yes, it has USB flash drive for adding splash, watching movies from, or even MP3 files. So that can free up your CD/DVD player if you don't have an IPOD.

Here is the smart adapter harness hooked up to the Pioneer cable shown earlier. The colors matched exactly so if you go color for color, it's a no brainer. I used these 18-22 guage butt splicers with crimping tool. I put them on the one cable and then adapted to the other cable tugging slightly to make sure they were secure.

Antenna Adapter:

Switch I plan on installing in the glove box later on to make it so that my player is compliant incase I get pulled over by the cops. Quick turn off before they get to the car.

Radio 10 removed after looking at Evilutions guild to removal.

Evilution - Smart Car Encyclopaedia

Looks like I got to watch the video just in time. It has been removed by the user.

Here I am showing the Tac/Clock and the shroud all lined up and what I did here, was take a soldering iron and make a groove to put the GPS cable thru so it would not get damaged. I installed the GPS right between the Tac/Clock like another forum user did.

T- 10 Torx removes the 2 screws that hold it in place. There is a connector that is right there so you can disconnect and remove it quite easily.

Here I am showing I tie-wrapped the antenna adapter to the harness so that it might not get removed while I reinstall radio. Just a nice thing to do.

Another picture of everything installed and tie-wrapped.

Picture of my GPS wire running thru the groove that I made with the soldering Iron. Fit quite good.

And the finished product:

Microphone installed for the blue-tooth. I ran the cable for it down the side plastic by windown and under the dash. Pain in the butt but it works.

And one final picture with it on and working.

Right now, my brake wire is hooked up directly to ground and seems to work fine.

Speed sensor is not needed but I will hook mine up later on when I do install my cruise control.

I did not hook up my reverse wire for camera as I have no plans at this time to even put one in.

Hope this helps those that were like me and scratching my head somewhat. Good luck.

Thanks for the photos and info on the install! Nice job.

Couple of questions: 1) where did you get the AVIC and your harness, face plate, etc. and 2) what's the plan when you need to use the sun visor?

Well, instead of looking at the web vendors for prices, I paid a premium I am guessing and got them from Paul at the Round Rock store, which he is a vendor on this site.

Rest of the stuff came with the Pioneer. That is a whole nother story. I bought it from a camera shop and when all was said and done, 550 went to 700. No worries though.

As for Mic, It is temperary, I still have to remove the plastic on the side to make it permanent. Visor works where it is, just move wire some and moves up and down, not an issue. Wife heard me just fine.

I just got done though with the software fix from AVIC411, pretty simple file replacement and grounding of brake wire which will go thru my switch soon. File made speed at which you can't watch dvd or enter addresses and what not from 10mph to 80mph. Naturally, switch is so that cops don't say it's illegal. But just tested it out on a non car prone street, and at 30mph I was able to enter my house number and drive back to it. Just have to test the voice recog software on it. Will add my glove box pics after I get done with the final mods.

I did pretty much the same install as you last weekend, except I put my gps receiver under the plastic dash cover. It has no problem receiving a signal there.

I put the microphone beside the instrument panel, it seemed easier than running it up to the visor.

Pictures are in my gallery.
