To Fill Or Not To Fill that is the Question?

I am planning to install my subwoofer box in the next few days.. I have heard of some of you stuffing the box with Polyester filling. What does this do for the sound.. Do I need to do this? I hope to hear some feed back.

I am installing the following:

Sony 8 inch Xplod sub/ Into the smart maddess under dash box.. (fill or no fill?)

I also ordered both my Amp and speakers from www.onlinecarstero.com
6 1/2 Kenwood KFC - 1682 ie speakers (these have great sound) They are the best I have heard.

The only reason I am using the sony xplod sub is because I already had it.

Aloha, Tim

I'm sorry I can't answer your fill question, but ...

I wish you the best of luck with them. From my personal experience. Hope the transaction goes better than mine did. There seems to be something wrong with your link.

This is the place, right?

EDIT: It looks like I mis-read your post and you've already received the equipment. That's good. I'm sure you're looking forward to the upgrade! Good luck.

Never heard of that either, but I would think it is a bad idea. Kind of why large opera singers dont need microphones... large resonating chamber. Or what would happen if you filled your acoustic guitar. You need air to make sound, and the larger the chamber, the better the sound.

I read somewhere on the interwebs that the polyester fill makes the box effectively larger.

Allow me to clarify why this material is vital in an enclosure: The material used is referred to as damping material. It is used for the purpose of absorbing reflected sound, so the bass is solid and smooth. Without it, you will have a boomy bass. The amount of damping material used, depends on the size of the enclosure. Every Hi End Speaker system utilise damping material. Every recording studio, every radio station control room utilise damping material, as stated above, to absorb reflected sound.
