Is you box short on airspace? This is the ONLY reason that you would need to add polyester filling. This little trick can help if you're only off by about 15%. If you're off much more than that, then you're SOL and need to either start over or get different speakers or build a bigger box. Stuff the whole box with fiberglass or polyester filling (Poly-fil can be bought at Wal-Mart at about $2 for a large bag). Rule of thumb: about 1 lb. per cubic-foot. This works by the fibers slowing down the sound waves and fooling the speaker into thinking it's in a bigger box.

Prior to what justincase said above,
polyester filling is NOT vital for an enclosure. In fact, most enclosures (that are built in the correct size volume for the subs) have absolutely NO need for polyester filling and most competition enclosures do not use it.

I also used Sony Xplod subs in the back of my smart roadster, but I could go to a max of 10inch, just.
I did'nt fill, but I ported instead, and I have a good sound from the install, I am no expert, just installed all my own systems incars and in house for years, so please don't ask me technical questions

Here is a piccy of the install
