Heads-up to those wanting a Pioneer Nav system

Just for those considering upgrading your factory radio with a Pioneer Nav system. They can only be upgraded by purchasing a upgrade cd, which will cost you $250. Other brands are upgraded through downloads which use USB or a memory card slot. You still have to pay for the update but its only like $40 or $50. I still think thats a lot, but compared to $250- its nothing.

dstrbd1 - Thanks for the heads up!! I was looking at the Pioneer systems (AVIC-Z3) for my smart but Crutchfield hadn't determined if it would fit. $250 for a new set of maps is stiff, even when you are paying $1800 for the system. I wonder what they are on e-bay?

Just found out the Eclipse Nav units are the same way. I know that Clarion and Alpine are updated through downloads. Hope this helps. For all its worth though- I will still be going with the Avic-Z3 or D3. Since it will be pretty much only for looks (i know, i know). I like the the look of the Pioneer better and the screen is much sharper compared to its compeditors.

Me, I am waiting for the AVIC F90BT

You will find that most manufacturers charge $200 or thereabouts for map upgrades, even for factory nav systems. Where Pioneer seems to be ridiculous is that, if I understand correctly, the Pioneer firmware updates (bug fixes) come with the map upgrades, so you end up paying for what should be merely warranty service.

vwW12 - The F90BT only has about a 6" screen but the Z3 is 7". every inch helps. I kind of like the i-pod controls on the touch screen but then, I haven't seen either except online so...for me, the bigger the display the better. My biggest problem will be to find a good install shop close to my home base. Otherwise, it will be a trip to California!!I really like the 30 gig HDD, 10 gig for music, the rest provides the Nav functions, therefore; I can play a CD while using the Nav system. We'll see how it goes, still have to explain to the wife why I need $1800.00 of navigation and sound enhancements in a new car. ;)

I haven't been able tto find new map dvd's on e-bay for the Z-3, it's too new but I have found the equipment for $1195.95 - $1295.95, quite a difference from the $1795.00 I've seen at some sound shops.

Plenty of room for most double din NAV to fit. I shall install a KENWOOD DNX-8120 as soon as I receive the adapter I ordered from Crutchfield and I will do a DIY. Removing the smart original radio and installing a double-din is VERY easy.

The KENWOOD comes with Bluetooth, and I added an inexpensive iPod cable as well as a FM real time traffic receiver.

The Kenwood DNX-5120 has Garmin nav and a manual volume knob, which is nice. You an add iPod, XM, Sirius, HD Radio, Bluetooth phone, etc. to it.
