Help upgrading radio 10

OK... I picked up my Cabrio today, and MAN... does the radio suck! It just sounds aweful.

I want to replace it but I have a few questions:

1) Has anyone replaced just the stereo unit with a better one and left the stock speakers? If so, did it sounds lots better with just swapping out the heat unit?

2) I want to replace the stereo with a nice stereo, but I'm afraid of having a really nice one stolen!!! So, I'm thinking just like a regular Pioneer CD MP3 player - not a double din.... is there a dash kit for something like this - maybe one that gives you an extra map pocket underneath? (since the stereo won't be taking up as much room??)

$10,000 stereo with $1 speakers? Bad sound. In other words replace the speakers first. Then go from there. Also, search the threads! Recommend Alpine SPS-600 speakers.

I am keeping the radio to not excite prying eyes, adding two amplifiers and new speakers (Focal 165 CA1 in doors, JL 8" subwoofer under dash). Still not sure about rear speakers - maybe some mid-woofers behind the seats, like in Andy Kahn Brabus car.
