Sorry - that is the best I could do!

I posted larger versions in the gallery. You can check them out there.

For connecting my iPhone in the smart, I went with the Griffin AutoPilot. Its power plug has playback controls on it that can be used without looking for safer operation. I ran the mini cable up behind the glovebox. The second photo shows the cable routing detail on the dash side (there was actually an opening where a screw might have gone - perfect for the cable).

iPhone

Rubik, thanks a lot, I was going to look into that solution once my car is here. Just two questions:
Despite that the iPhone is not mentioned as a compatible on
http://www.griffintechnology.com/products/autopilot
does it work nevertheless, and charge the iPhone correctly?
While you get a call, does the pause/start button on the autopilot allows you to switch your iPhone from mp3 player mode to the phone mode, meaning that you don't have to touch the iPhone itself to switch from playback to phone and answer your call?

Indeed the box does not mention that the AutoPilot works with the iPhone (though it works with the iPod Touch and other iPods). I e-mailed Griffin to ask if it would work despite the labeling, and they replied that their Quality Assurance folks had tested it and found it works. When you connect it, however, you'll get an alert on the iPhone saying it is not compatible, simply dismiss the alert. The play/pause and track advance controls only control track playback. When the phone rings, the music fades and pauses, but you must tap the phone to answer the call. My solution for that is to use a Bluetooth headset which is tapped to answer when the phone rings (we're required to use a hands-free device here in California - a law that'll be encforced starting 7/1).

Rubik

Thank you for your research. I will opt for your elegant solution... when the car arrives!

Rubik,

Glad that works. I looked at it too, but opted for the Tuneflex because 1) I don't have an iPhone - only my 2ndGen nano, 2) I like the built-in mount for the nano, and 3) I was concerned the lighter plug was too deep under the dash to effectively use the controls. The Tuneflex brings the nano and its controls right up to the dash and easy reach. Of course, that doesn't help much with a iPhone!

Enjoy!

I agree, the other one looks cool too, and sounds convenient but then to have to reach all the way down to push a button sounds a bit inconvenient, I've got the ipod touch and then a super old granny ipod like 2nd gen or something. I use the old one in the car mostly.

Even though I haven't gotten my tune flex yet, I'm now curious on the hole you talk about! I'm super new at this so bare with me. I'm attaching a picture with 3 colored arrows drawn on. Can you tell me if I'm the least bit close to the hole you're talking about? I can feel a gap around the red arrow, then the blue one points to something that looks like a plug that may be able to come out? and then the yellow one doesn't look like it because in the picture you have the wire goes towards the back.

Any help is appreciated
