iPod Shuffle 1st gen hook-up??

Ok, frustration has gotten the best of me :-( I have a first gen shuffle, you know - the chewing gum pack size one....I bought an alledged converter so I could plug it into the little jack in my bumblebee...well, first try bought the total wrong thing...so I went to Radioshack, got a thing that plugs into the iPod and goes into the socket...one that alledgedly uses an empty FM station...well, I hooked the thing all up, and found the shuffle wouldn't plug into the USB port on the adaptor thingy. (LOL) So, bright idea, went and pulled my USB hub out of my laptop bag, into which I plugged the shuffle. Upshot is, I plugged everything in and STILL no-go. WTF?? Anyone have a clue as to what I am talking about and what I might need? (One of my soliders today told me all I need is a male/male connector from the iPod earphones to the iPod connector in the glovebox...)

Clueless I am!!!

Bumblebee!!!

iPod shuffle

That's the simplest solution: connect any mp3 audio output (where you plug your headset) to the glove compartment "aux" input. For that, use a Shielded Stereo Audio Cable of any length, probably a short one will do.

I. e. ($4.99)

But that will NOT charge your iPod. For more elegant solutions, and to keep your device charging while in use, go to:
Ipod nano (and other mp3)

Awww, man - it would have to be some simple $5 fix - after I spent $100+ on stuff that doesn't work and isn't right...darn. I can send the one thing back to Griffin and pay the restocking fee, but the other Griffin product I bought at radioshack will prob be unreturnable as I totally mangled the packaging. Oh well - I knew I should have asked the question WAY before I started to buy things, but didn't want to sound so clueless. Once I heard the word from my subordinate, however, I knew I NEEDED to ask all the experts! <grin>

The solution you were given (FM transmitter) is for autoradio that do not have the mp3 "aux" input. Maybe you can resell it.

I'll either try that or just install it in our Honda.

No offense, but if you had a hundred bucks to spend trying to solve the problem of your old iPod, did you ever consider getting a new iPod?

We're smart owners -- we aim to be different, not simpler!

As for the OP's situation, the 1st gen shuffle presents some unique problems, namely that USB plug. All other ipods use the standard dock connector instead of a USB plug. So you can't really use the Griffin Tuneflex (which uses the standard ipod dock connector) that was suggested in an earlier post with a link unless you use something like a USB-to-ipod dock adapter:

mwave.com: BELKIN ipod shuffle USB dock adapter (#F8Z026)

The advantage of this is that you can then use this adapter to plug your shuffle into the Tuneflex, which will both charge your shuffle and allow you to send the audio through the unamplified dock connector, rather than through the headphone port. The headphone port, I believe, sends an amplified audio signal, which becomes more distorted (at high volume) than a signal coming through the dock connector.

Or if you don't care about that approach, you can, as suggested by someone else, simply use a male-to-male cable for a few bucks to send audio from your headphone jack to the aux input jack in the glovebox. As that person noted, this won't charge your shuffle for you. So, if you also want to charge your shuffle, you'd need something like a usb charger for cars, like the one below:

Universal USB Car Charger Adaptor (You would need a 3-4 ft male-to-male cable to reach the aux input from the car's charger (unless you put a 12v charger in your glovebox like Cubefx has so skilfully done: Additional 12v socket (updated)

Of course, all this raises the question that someone else asked: Is it time to consider getting a different ipod?

But what the heck, be different! More power to you (pun intended)!
