We're smart owners -- we aim to be different, not simpler!
As for the OP's situation, the 1st gen shuffle presents some unique problems, namely that USB plug. All other ipods use the standard dock connector instead of a USB plug. So you can't really use the Griffin Tuneflex (which uses the standard ipod dock connector) that was suggested in an earlier post with a link unless you use something like a USB-to-ipod dock adapter:
mwave.com: BELKIN ipod shuffle USB dock adapter (#F8Z026)
The advantage of this is that you can then use this adapter to plug your shuffle into the Tuneflex, which will both charge your shuffle and allow you to send the audio through the unamplified dock connector, rather than through the headphone port. The headphone port, I believe, sends an amplified audio signal, which becomes more distorted (at high volume) than a signal coming through the dock connector.
Or if you don't care about that approach, you can, as suggested by someone else, simply use a male-to-male cable for a few bucks to send audio from your headphone jack to the aux input jack in the glovebox. As that person noted, this won't charge your shuffle for you. So, if you also want to charge your shuffle, you'd need something like a usb charger for cars, like the one below:
Universal USB Car Charger Adaptor (You would need a 3-4 ft male-to-male cable to reach the aux input from the car's charger (unless you put a 12v charger in your glovebox like Cubefx has so skilfully done:
Additional 12v socket (updated)
Of course, all this raises the question that someone else asked: Is it time to consider getting a different ipod?
But what the heck, be different! More power to you (pun intended)!
