John: i never really touch the handbrake.... so i don't think that was the issue. I mean.... like i said, i don't recall seeing the brake light lit up at the time, since the dash panel is the first thing i looked at when it started beeping to see if anything was showing up.

Hmm... another thing i just noticed. Not sure why, but for some reason if i have the head unit set to get signal from the tuner, the under seat sub seems to work. If i play from a CD/DVD.... the under seat sub doesn't seem to do anything.

You might have things equalized differently for the different modes. Since the normal installation would be to install an adapter that gives you access to all wires in the car's harness, the wires you hook up for one door speaker channel and the opposite side tweeter channel are what feed the under-seat sub. Only by providing different levels of base will the sub "work" in one mode and not in another. The speaker wires have no knowledge of whether you're getting signal from the tuner or CD.

yea.... i knew the wires had no way to determine that. I'm almost thinking about seeing if it'd be possible to somehow separate the output to the sub from the other speakers, and connect it to one of the sub outputs on the head unit.

Would something like that even be possible that you know of?

It should be possible - the sub inputs are just those two speaker/tweeter channels. Wiring the inputs in parallel to the sub channel output might work but the factory subwoofer will still try to filter and amplify the signal on its own, perhaps fighting the head unit to some degree.

yea. and i guess the idea of the sub being fed by a woofer and opposite tweeter could explain why the sound is a bit off when i tried adjusting the fader from front to rear.

Any links to how the wiring is done for the Smart's speakers/sub? maybe with pics or a wiring diagram or both?

There might be something on the evilution.co.uk site but I'd just look at what color the speaker wires are that are "doubled up" at the radio connector - those are the same wires you'll see feeding audio into the sub at the other end of the harness.

hmm..... might even be possible to somehow separate the wires so that fading to the front and rear fades between the tweeters and the woofers..... but i think that'd be going a little too far, especially seeing as that would make it more work to reconnect the stock radio should i eventually sell the car and keep the in-dash nav. guess i'll check evilution, but i don't remember seeing anything similar before last time i browsed around there.

ED -

Didn't you install the radio? Didn't you hook up the tweeters to one pair of channels and the door speakers to the other pair of channels? You should have four 2-wire sources and four 2-wire destinations. Your head unit should already provide front/back fade to control the tweeter/door amplitudes independently. Did you hook those 8 wires up in a different fashion?
