Hm. I dunno... Depends on whose database Kenwood uses for nav data (didn't someone say that KW/Pioneer/someone else used Garmin data?), how often they do major updates, and how the updater package handles the new data...
The thing is it would depend on whether a map update only updates the maps in the set that have actually got new data in them, or if the updater does a whole new map set whether everything has actually been touched or not; that varies from one mapmaker to another.
For example, I loaded all of Garmin's City Navigator N. America onto a 2Gb SD card for my 2610. I did it twice; once via direct USB connection to the GPS, and once by card-reader. it took about an hour to load on the reader, almost two and a half hours via direct USB conection to the GPS unit. And the next time I do an update, it'll do every map in my set, whether it's got new data or not. So for me and my 2610, it's kind of a no-brainer. You'll have to check into how the Kenwood unit handles nav data to help make you that decision for your system.
SD card readers are pretty darn cheap these days, though. And if you don't absolutely have to have all of North America available at your fingertips, you can save some money and uploading time by using a smaller SD card and/or only loading the maps you need for the trip at hand into your system, rather than everything between the oceans, assuming the nav package gives you that option.
HTH...
