Kenwood GPS Head unit owners - question for ya

I received my 8120 yesterday and glanced quickly through the manual. I have a question regarding map updating.

The manual says to update via SD card, which would require me to buy an SD reader.

I recall some owners saying the maps could be updated via USB. Is that true? If so, that would seem to be the easier and cheaper way of updating the maps.

Thanks

I'm not a Kenwood owner (nor do I play one on TV), but I will say from experience with my Garmin GPS unit (a 2610, if anyone cares) that updating via USB to the head unit is more likey than not going to be a l-o-t s-l-o-w-e-r than updating via card reader.

Just a data point, YMMV, nothing to see here, move along...

Thanks Rigger. I did not know that USB updating would be a lot slower. Knowing that now, let me ask a new question.

I would probably update my maps yearly or every other year. Would the faster update via SD warrant the cost of buying an SD reader? Or would my infrequent map updates be justification for a slow USB update?

tbone28- My screen on the 7120 opens to allow a DVD/CD to be installed and there is a port for the SD card there as well. Maybe it's the same on the 8120?

Yes, I have the same. Which route did you choose for map updates? And have you done so yet?

I guess I'm trying to justify the cost of buying an SD reader and SD card versus just a cheap flash drive.

Hm. I dunno... Depends on whose database Kenwood uses for nav data (didn't someone say that KW/Pioneer/someone else used Garmin data?), how often they do major updates, and how the updater package handles the new data...

The thing is it would depend on whether a map update only updates the maps in the set that have actually got new data in them, or if the updater does a whole new map set whether everything has actually been touched or not; that varies from one mapmaker to another.

For example, I loaded all of Garmin's City Navigator N. America onto a 2Gb SD card for my 2610. I did it twice; once via direct USB connection to the GPS, and once by card-reader. it took about an hour to load on the reader, almost two and a half hours via direct USB conection to the GPS unit. And the next time I do an update, it'll do every map in my set, whether it's got new data or not. So for me and my 2610, it's kind of a no-brainer. You'll have to check into how the Kenwood unit handles nav data to help make you that decision for your system.

SD card readers are pretty darn cheap these days, though. And if you don't absolutely have to have all of North America available at your fingertips, you can save some money and uploading time by using a smaller SD card and/or only loading the maps you need for the trip at hand into your system, rather than everything between the oceans, assuming the nav package gives you that option.

HTH...

At the time of install, my tech told me all I had to do was order the SD upgrade from Kenwood/Garmin and shove it into the slot below the DVD/CD drive. The equipment would then recognize it and upload the map upgrade. Cost from Kenwood/Garmin $99.

I have 5120, updates via DVD.

Dunerunner, he may have a "special" update laying around already :-) A 2gb SD card is only $5.00. Try the USB stick, if it doesn't work, then you have your answer.
