Kenwood8120 - map & software updating

I looked for, but couldn't find an earlier discussion I thought I remembered on this subject.

I've purchased, and currently have in transit to me, the map update on SD.

The Garmin web site advises that before the map update, the receiver and navigation software MUST be updated. First off, is that a fact?

But, I'd probably want to do it whether is is a MUST or not, correct?

But then I don't see the DNX 8120 listed on the page where you're supposed to select the version of receiver software:
2009 Navigation/Multimedia model / firmware updater / Kenwood Corporation
According to Garmin, the Receiver software needs to be updated before the navigation software is updated (and both before the map update).

Maybe the navigation software upgrade will do away with the occasional breakup I hear in the voice guidance.

Has anyone here done this three step upgrade? Any clues for the clueless?

You've probably searched around too; I can't find anything about 8120 firmware updates except complaints about there not being any.

This Garmin page talks about ensuring a firmware update has been done but does not mention the 8120 model: http://www8.garmin.com/products/kenw..._procedure.pdf

Try contacting Kenwood support to verify the firmware in your unit is the latest available: 1-800-KENWOOD (536-9663)

I called customer support. They told me the reason I couldn't find a receiver update is because it doesn't yet exist. According to the representative I spoke with, all I need to do is the navigation and the map, and I'm good to go.

Now, why did Garmin send me on a wild goose chase?

I'm not sure what is "up" with Kenwood's website.

If I type DNX6020EX into the search field nothing is returned. Added spaces DNX 6020 EX still nothing. How about adding a dash DNX-6020 EX nope. OK let's try a second dash... Nope.

So I try the "power" of google... site:kenwoodusa.com DNX6020EX

Find the three manuals in PDF format, and the accessory cables.

Kinda weird that Kenwood as so little information on their website about this unit. This was the dealer installed navi system.

Kenwood / Garmin maps update

I bought the Kenwood DNX210EX from my smart dealer (used, pulled from another smart). I emailed Kenwood and they said there were not any firmware updates for my unit either. Also, according to a Garmin rep, they will be releasing the 2011 maps in about a month or so.
