Not what you are asking but not meant to be a smart ass answer either...

Some construction folks I know have a mount kit that puts a note book in similar position as in police cruisers.

Rather inexpensive GPS adapter in USB port and provided soft ware and a host of open source map tools (free)...even has capability to add info on all their workers on other sites and track movement of individule trucks in thier groups...

I thought it fairly cool for the supervisor and he said it was necessary to have just to find remote job sites or route through down town areas ... he even showed me how it cross loads to his PDA and he can use the PDA navi features for site surveys and upload to the map tool and feed to some other construction estimating software to figure things like linear feet of temporary fencing for the large site...

Just yammering... but I was really impressed how he took a simple navigation tool and using a laptop got a lot more utility out of much less money the say a Gamin Nuvi

Back to your question... most of the high end in dash double DIN head units with video scree on the 7" range fit and have been featured on a few smarts on this site

the install looks pretty good...just not my cup o tea

A 7" screen would be about the biggest you could get into the Smarts dashboard, replacing the double DIN stereo unit with an in dash navigation/stereo.

Nice idea with the laptop mount, might be a bit big though! Maybe do a similar thing with an EeePC or similar mini laptop, with a GPS receiver and sat nav software installed. EeePC is a little 7" screen laptop, running Linux on flash memory. You'd have the same size screen as an in dash unit, but you can take it with you (and do other stuff, its a whole computer!).

I'm watching other posts to see how common those 7 inch nav/entertainment units become. Sure like to drop one in my smart. Stock radio sucks (well, speakers suck, anyway). Be nice to have a touch screen nav AND radio/CD/DVD/1.21 jigawatt reactor/whatever in dash.

ITMT, speaking of laptops, I have a Fujitsu P1610 tablet that I bought for carrying in my tank bag on my motorcycle. Screen is not the greatest daylight readable, and the audio is lousy, but for what it is has been a real asset for traveling. Coupled with a Holux SIRF III USB cable and WIFI built in, it does a lot on the road. I have moving map with directions using MS Streets and trips.

It'll fit in my smart... smartly!

Now about that in dash.....

I installed a KENWOOD DNX-8120 today. It was an easy almost plug-in swap, thanks in no small parts to some previous posts by members here.

I got GPS (with traffic), Bluetooth phone and iPod, the three features I most wanted.

I shall post a thread about the install.
