Here's the mono Profile California AP700 amp, it's rated to put out 220 rms @ 4ohms. I wasn't to kean on this brand but decided to give it a try anyway, considering it's only $119 and has great ratings on Crutchfield. It's feels very solid, so far I'm not disappointed with my choice. The CDT EF-80 sub is rated for 200 rms (great price, $59 at woofersetc.com).

Overall, the bass sounds great, nice and clean.

Lookin Good! How's the base. I noticed you used the JL sub - I am planning to try a Pioneer as well before I make a final decision.

well I missed that one. It's not a JL but CDT. Thanks for sharing all the details. No one can know too much about how to get great sound in their car.

Save $100 bucks at go with this CDT sub versus JL, the bass is great. CDT's are great speakers.

I looked at the Pioneer thin sub too, but it only handles 120 rms, besides, mounting depth is not an issue.

its a small car you don't need a 1000w sub to get good sound. the pioneer would sound just fine in the smart. they make great products. i could take that sub put it in a box and hook it up to a 1000w amp and it will work just fine.

I'm just trying to save him money :-) Why spend more for less? There is obviously a downside to thin subs, the only benefit I see is for people who doesn't have the depth for a traditional sub.

Thanks guys, my experience with JL is limited, but I know what that Pioneer sounds like in other applications and it rocks. Seems that the box was designed around a JL, so that's why I wanted to compare. Actually, I bought the JL a little cheaper than the Pioneer, however, I paid less than a 100 ea for them so we're not talking much money here. We are all on the same page when it comes to spending money on this stuff, after all it's almost not essential equipment... WAIT A MINUTE disregard that last statement. What am I thinking - of course a great sound system is required !!

Sorry, I don't understand what you bought. Did you get a new stereo/head unit, or an entire sound system?

What you'll need is stereo kit to to fit an aftermarket head unit in the factory location: METRA 99-8715 SMART fortwo 2008+ CAR STEREO DASH KIT - eBay (item 300295176302 end time Mar-21-09 13:27:51 PDT)

A stereo harness to utilize the factory wiring without having to cut/splice the factory harness: eBay Motors: Car Stereo wiring Harness SMART FORTWO 08 09 2008 2009 (item 310051377135 end time Apr-11-09 17:45:43 PDT)

You can find some helpful instructions here for removing factory stereo: FQ101 : Taking Modification to the Next Level

Please be more detailed on what you bought.
