Polk 651 Install With Custom "Mounting Adapter"

i installed polk 651s today. i wanted a rear mount setup just like stock so i could retain the factory grilles. the mounting adapter that came with the polks was pretty useless for this application -- i could not see how to make it work without designing some custom retaining clip for three our of four mounting points. then i came up with a better idea -- use the old speakers to make a mounting adapter.

basically i cut the back off the old speaker and trimmed the face flat to make the mounting bracket. i used a coarse file to smooth out the new bracket front and back. i reused the plug from the old speaker as shown on the evilution site (great idea). i put the polk-supplied rubber gasket between the new mounting adapter and the speaker back. after trimming the polk-supplied screws some i had an easy to make mount solution that used all four of the stock mounting holes. it worked out pretty well!

Nicely done. Alternatively, you can attach the supplied mounting rings to the speakers and use the supplied clips. Just put the clips in the factory holes and squeeze their top ends inbeetween the supplied mounting ring and the speaker. Mine have held up just fine for the the last 12k+ miles and 12 months.

thanks, i looked at that approach and was concerned the clips might come loose over time. getting everything off to access the speakers was not the easiest (though not too bad once you know what you are doing) so i decided i only wanted to do the job once.

speakers sound great, i am thinking of adding another pair in the rear and maybe some factory tweeters up front.

I had a heck of a time with these Polk speakers, ended up using another set of mounting adapters and got 3 out of the 4 screws to work.

powerbookguy, that is one way to recycle... but one thing that your way does not take into consideration is the possible depth issue with bigger magnets and also the fact that to do any future changes you have to dismantle the door yet once again. I know that the dismantling part is not something people do on a bi-monthly basis.. but it could be. the real or should I say the more probable issue is mounting depth and lack there off. I used Polk MM series and just had enough clearance in back to not impede the functioning of the windows mechanism.. and that is with installing them on the interior panel of the door.
