Save the Jack (Aux In)

Hey,
I noticed that a lot of people when installing aftermarket headunits ripping out factory Aux In jack just to route new Aux In cable thru the hole in the glove box.
Here is the way to keep factory look. Get 3.5mm (1/8") Stereo Phone Plug from RadioShack. Cut the factory plug off. There is three wires: White, Brown , and Clear. Now all you need is to solder wires to the new plug.

yep great mod if you radio has a front or rear aux input i have a ton of those aux cables from the smarts laying around

I bought a plug for $0.89 from Fry's Electronics. It is made by Philmore 3.5mm Phone Plug Stereo Part 502P. Fry's part code appears to be 1752742.

Radio Shack version: RadioShack Gold Series 1/8" Stereo Plug
Model: 274-858 | Catalog #: 274-858 $3.99

The one Cubefx has is more rugged. Cubefx can you describe how the wires are hooked up on the inside of the jack? I tried a few ways with the wiring and couldn't get it to work. No sense in pulling everything apart again until I know the correct wiring. Assuming your plug is similar to the one I bought. Any chance you can take a picture of the plug when it is apart to show the correct wiring placement?

I pulled my headunit out and took some pictures, but because I'm using heatshrink tubing insulation over my connectors there is no way you will to figure out what wire goes where. I will try to explain it in more details.
Once you cut your factory plug you will see three wires there: BROWN, WHITE and CLEAR/NO INSULATION. Your new plug should have three stems LONG, MEDIUM and SHORT.
CLEAR/NO INSULATION wire attached to long stem,
BROWN to medium,
WHITE to the shortest stem.

Make sure that they contacts not touching each other. That is might be one of the problems. I usually put heatshrink tubing over contacts.

I am not sure about how it is done in 450, but you probably just need to get something like this.

id like to add to this

my deck uses rca style aux inputs

so the same procedure for stripping the brown white and clear works
then the white is signal for the left +
and the brown is signal for the right +
and the clear is the shield or - both channels share this colour

so what i did is cut a rca cable apart and twist the shield wires together then the other ones to the appropriate colours solder all of it then heat shrink it all together

same idea just i had to do a test with my multimeter to see what colour corresponded to what part of the 1/8" plug/jack so the right sounds comes out of the right speaker and left goes to left

Hmm, kind of confused: I want to split the input behind the glovebox. I had seen some pics that suggested that I could take a Y splitter and split it out of the radio before the glovebox. Is this not the case?
