You should ride around for a while with the tweeters taped in place in various locations before deciding on their placement. Although tweeters up high places them near the ear, if they are farther away the distance of each tweeter from each ear is more equal. This can create a deeper, wider soundstage. Many of the cars that are built to compete in car stereo contests have the speakers mounted in the kick panel for this reason. Also, the greater the distance between the woofer and tweeter, the greater the potential for the sound to become smeared. Many high end speakers point this out in their instruction manual. There are quite a few speakers available that have coaxially-mounted tweeters that swivel, and outboard crossovers to give great sound without having to play around with tweeter mounting (i.e., cutting holes in irregular surfaces or surface mounting).
