Thoughts about a aux GPS power port

I have a Garmin 650 GPS. Instead of plugging it into the 12V recepticle I was thinking about adding a aux pwr port on the top of the dash. It would be connected to 12VDC and look very similar to the MP3 connector. I would cut the GPS pwr cord shorter and change to connector end to match the pwr port. I use a beanbag mount to place it on the dash.

Any thoughts on this?

I don't have my smartie yet but will before xmas (DDE says so and it's never wrong!)

Cube did a nice hidden 12V receptacle install in the cubby left of the steering wheel. I haven't a clue where that thread is though and can't remember the name of it. Searched - came up with nothing. I used the beanbag mount for quite a while then went permanent about a month ago - left A/C vent.

I saw that thread. I just want to be able to mount it without any long cables and be able to move it to one of my other vehicles if I ever drive them again.

Perhaps a 12V outlet under the dash on the left side of the steering column. Easy to run the wire in between the dash and door pillar (mine is that way now) and then hook up under there out of sight while folding up excess wire and leaving the factory 12V receptacle free and open of any unsightly plugs.
