Touch screen headunit & IPhone

I am thinking of up grading my Kenwood DPX-503 to a touch screen unit.My question is for those who have one of the various touch screens and hook up an IPhone/Ipod through the rear USB.Do you still have "full" control of the IPhone with the controls on the screen or does it lock out all controls except for the most basic;FF,RW,suffle.
I would like to have more control to chose songs etc. w/o having to disconnect my IPhone, finding what I want and then re-connecting it.I am using the Kenwood IPhone interface that uses the CD changer plug and it is a PTA.I could go through the front USB but I don't like the wire hanging there.
Also, could someone post a picture of the screen with an IPhone hooked up and playing?

I've got a pioneer u310bt on order that should be arriving this weekend. I also want good control of my iPhone from the head unit. I'll let you know how it works once I've got it installed!

Nonuro, the unit came in this weekend, and I've got it most of the way installed. Functionally installed, still trying to figure out how I want to do various cable routing and such anyway.

So, I realize I dont know what to say about it, as I dont have experience with other units to compare it to. I will say however, that so far I am really liking it. Replacing the stock unit with this made a dramatic difference in my sound quality. More dramatic than the speaker upgrades I'd already done. I think I am actually most of the way happy with my soundsystem now, outside of cleaning up some wiring.

But anyway, as far as the part you care about. It seems to work pretty well with the iphone. Bluetooth works nicely. It was able to receive the phone book from the iphone via bluetooth, which I have heard that some other units have issues with? I can make and receive calls without too much work, although I havent gotten the microphone properly routed/placed yet.

The ipod functionality also works pretty well. There is no cover art displayed on this unit, but I knew that when I bought it. It also doesnt do video, but again, I knew that beforehand. I am able to browse my songs by artist, album, playlist, genre, etc. I wouldnt call the browsing very graceful however. You spin the knob to scroll through the list, but it only devotes a few lines of the display to displaying that information. As such, when you have a large library, that's a lot of scrolling. I dont think I would be comfortable trying to browse much while driving. I suspect I'll just work more from shuffle and playlists when I need to pick stuff while driving.

Despite that, I think it offers all the functionality I wanted. If there is something specific you want to know if it does, let me know and I'll see if I cant figure out how to do it.

Dovienya, thanks for keeping me up to date.I guess what I am asking is-Do any off these fancy smancy touchscreen headunits show the album art and allow control of the iphone that way?I couldn't think of the phrasing until you mentioned it.

The higher up units from mine should show the album art, I believe. I just didnt want to spend that much. Look into the x710bt and x910bt from pioneer. They also have a new Z model, but I dont remember it's number off the top of my head. the u310 doesnt have any video capabilities, so doesnt do too much graphically.

I am finding that it's pretty easy to make and receive calls from the head unit. What other control are you looking for? I'm pretty much positive that there arent any headunits out there that will go as far as displaying iphone applications on screen and such, although that would be pretty cool.

I have ordered a Kenwood DNX6140. In my research this is one of the only units that will charge the iPhone. I am not sure about if it displays album art, but you can control the unit. It also is the "approved" smart GPS unit that is available at most smart centers. I will let you know my experience once I have it installed which should be next weekend.
