(451) Wiring diagram for trailer?

Had someone ask today about which wires to tap into for hooking up trailer lights. I have no clue - anyone have the the correct wires or a diagram you could post? Thanks!

I hope better late than never works in this case. Here's how to connect up your trailer lights. The left brake/turn signal wire located in the compartment on the rear drivers side is black with a white stripe. The right turn signal/brake wire is located in the rear compartment on the passenger side and it's green with a black stripe. The lights wire is green with a grey stripe and it's in the same passenger side compartment. The trailer lighting is left turn signal / brake light is yellow and light is brown. The right side turn signal / brake light is green and light is brown.

this should be good enough to get you going.

Not wanting to alarmist, but the way everything is tied together on this car I'd think twice about splicing. Way back I heard of a company across the northern border selling a plug-n-play type pigtail. Anyone else remember who?

Trailer wiring kit

Smart Universe sells a 'kit' for wiring up a trailer SAFELY. It seems I"ve read that the voltage through the regular tail light wires is under par for connecting the extra lights of a trailer, or something like that. I know the kit from Smart Universe uses a 'heavy duty hot wire feed coming directly off the battery' since I've just ordered mine in and received it. I have not hooked it up yet, but it looks rather straight forward and also has a built in fuse of its own, which I totally favor. Id check out his site under the towing section if you want a simple hook up. HE also has the instruction manual for installing online so you can read it before you decide to purchase it or not.

Good luck.

yes I agree with Godfather and Harleyduo that you should use a powered wiring kit, that way the trailer will not add any load to the tailight circuits in your Smart. Although in real life the small trailers we are likely to pull will not add much of a load and besides the Smart is protected by fuses on those circuits. However, that being said, it's better to be on the safe side.
