Looks like a real bodge job to me, far too much weight to tow with the tailgate, and using the block of wood is a stroke of pure genius.
In some back-woodsy off-map types of places, it may not be exactly legal but it is one of things that just wouldn't be enforced.

Around my parts the Department of Transportation officers would have me in a sling, or at least a body part, if I tried something like that. (I live very close to a major interstate, within 5 miles)

I broke our 80 year old car out the garage this morning for a spin to visit relatives and did a full systems check before we set out. Sure enough 5 miles down the road the state troopers were doing random checks. Luckily, in an 80 year old car you don't look like too much of a shady person anyhow - even me. So they waved me through no questions asked.

forest - yep, I messed up that hotlink originally and doubleposted. The corrected pic explains a lot. Using wood to tow with isn't a good idea...don't ask me how I would know such a thing.

Could this be the reason that the license number is blacked out? Or is he just too embarassed?

Having towed a RV the last three years, I keep thinking I have seen all the stupid things people can do. Then a new one pops up.

I saw a guy with a single axle Ford towing a triple a couple of years ago on I-95. Every time he hit a dip the front end lifted off the ground.

I don't understand why people want to risk their lives to save a few bucks on a good tow vehicle.

I use a Ford F350 dually with Tow Boss (26000 GCVW) to tow a 38 foot toy hauler. I never fill the water tanks and even with two bikes in the back I run about 25000 lbs. It only gets sporty when some azzhat slams on the brakes in front of me for no reason... But I have 12 tires on the ground and can stop pretty quick!

My wife wants to put the smart in the back of the toy hauler. I suspect it would shift the weight too far back, but it would fit.

I don't mind them risking their lives...but it's when they risk our lives with this kind of idiocy that gets to me.

Necessity is the mother of invention, but I'm not sure how necessary it is to pull an RV like that. Maybe he was just moving it around the yard?

Notice the stronger chains holding the tailgate up.

What a patch work quilt! He should call it the America's Affordable Health Choices Act of 2009. It might just work!

Nice work though, notice the wooden dowel that goes into the post and through the bottom hitch?
