I also tow the smart and do not have a battery cutoff switch. Make sure you do turn the ignition switch to the left as far as possible to cut off the power though after putting the gear shift in neutral.

Maybe this idea of using a cutoff switch was somebody's idea of preventing a user from draining the battery because of forgetting to turn off the ignition switch - or maybe there were complaints of people draining batteries.

At any rate, a cutoff switch in not necessary, and if you do use one it will introduce other problems.

Carol, howz about posting a pic or two with your Smart hooked up behind your Born Free? Glad you didn't mess around with a battery cut-off switch. I think it would have introduced more problems than it solved. Besides, it isn't necessary.

Hope to see you some day at a Born Free Leap'n Lions RV Club rally.

Currently my motorhome is in the shop getting the wind sensor for the awning replaced, and the smart is sitting in my driveway so I'm obviously NOT currently towing. But I WAS towing when I dropped the motorhome off at the shop, and I'll be towing again when I pick it up. I'll also be towing again on Friday when we get away for our regular weekend outing.

I would hope that nobody would be stupid enough to be reading, and responding, to this thread while they are currently towing...

Don't know if you will be able to see it - but there is an article in the FMCA magazine, Jan 2009, that shows all towables for this year. Smart is included. Try this link http://www.fmca.com/images/stories/pdf/towing_09.pdf

The FMCA magazine article confirms that the battery must be disconnected.

Then it confirmed an error. It is not necessary to disconnect the battery, as many members of this owners' forum that actually tow a Smart have confirmed.
