Hitch questions

So I have been using my smart for trips up to the cabin, but it is limited as to how much I can throw in. A cooler would be nice, along with some lawn chairs... I do have a small trailer (flatbed) that I used behind the motorcycle that could work well behind my smart. I can easily lift it by hand to grease wheel bearings.

My concern is that the hitch will hang down under the car causing problems in driveways and alleys. There is a nasty one right next to my house. Also, I would like to go with a removable reciever type so I don't hack into my leg when I walk past the back. Is there one that has a minimal stickout? I wouldn't mind cutting out the rear valance to give more room underneath. No dual exhaust, just a Pure here.

Open to suggestions. Got the trailer covered.

I put the Curt 11020 (part number from memory, I think it's right) which has a 1 1/4 inch receiver. Bought it on eBay for a bit less than retail. It was a bit of a job putting it on since you have to drill two holes for fishing carriage bolts through but it has not scraped on anything yet to my knowledge including speed bumps. I don't plan to tow with it. I have a luggage pod for back there.

Jim,

I put a Curt on my other smart and it has rarely ever bottomed out if ever. It is so close to the rear wheels the bump/curb would have to be very sharp for it to be a problem.

The car it is now on is my daughter's and I haven't heard her complain about it. I would like to pull that hitch off of her car and add it to mine but it is a heavy thing and I really don't care to add much more weight to carry around on the car besides my wife and myself. I'm going to weld something up instead.

Good luck on your decision and keep us informed on what you add.

Over 10k on my hitch now... Completely removable to stock... No signs of wear or stress. I'm on the iPhone or I'd link it for you.

Rarely drags... No stick out beyond bumper. Also makes best mount for bike racks. Purchased and installed by U Haul.

A new development.... The wife took it up to the cabin today, she mentioned she wished it was a Cabrio.... maybe a trade in for a 2010???

We've had no problem with our Curt hitch, although we take it out when not actually hauling a trailer. The receiver also makes a nice mount for our spare, carried Continental style.

I'm assuming that because I have the dual center exhaust I can't get this hitch Is there another solution?
