I have not purchased a Smart Car as of yet. I am looking for a more economical way to get my Wave Runner to the locations near me, instead of using my Avalanche. I am researching the different models.
Does anyone know the actual towing capacities on the different versions, new or used?
So far by my calculations here is where I am at:
SmartCar Towing Capacity: ?
SmartCar Hitch Capacity: 1000 lbs (100 lbs max adds to GVW)
Wave Runner WET: 924 lbs (assuming 8 lbs per gallon of gas, 18 gallons)
Trailer Wieght: ? (I can lift it myself not too heavy - 76 lbs left)
Any insight into the Tow Capacities would be awesome.
I prefer the convertible.

The one thing you forgot to figure in is how steep is the boat ramp you plan to launch from. I towed my 2 jetskis to the lake but I was not brave enough to back it down the ramp.

The funniest part of this is the fact that just ONE of those Sea-Doos has more horsepower than the smart...fire 'em both up and you could probably push the smart to the boat launch...hehe

I have a Polaris RZR which is about 960lbs. Im still waiting on my smart but do you guys think it could tow it? No steep ramps involved as with a boat or Sea-Doos

I think you would be OK. If the tung weight is not too much

On another Smart forum one member stated they wrote Smart and got a reply of 1,000lbs.

I towed a whole 100lbs for 100 miles today - never felt it back there except the trailer is still in the "working the bugs out" stage so it makes a racket due to the lack of a suspension at the moment. It bounces - leaf springs are in the near future.

Looks like it might be able to tow...

...this:
Com Pac Picnic Cat

14' length, 500 lbs displacement.
Even counting the weight of a 4HP outboard and a trailer, it ought to come out under 1000 Lbs.

Not sure that it'll be able to drag the boat up a launch ramp though. I'm thinking I might have to use a winch and a dolly under the trailer tongue (keep the car at the top of the ramp with the brakes locked, and pull the trailer up to level ground before hooking it back up).

Either that or have someone else with a larger vehicle do the actual launch and retrieval...

(my other vehicles can't tow much either).
