Newbie towing question.

Hello all,

I have a 2002 Ford Windstar and a 2004 Chrysler Pacifica both with a max tow weight of 3,500 pounds. I am looking to tow a 2006 19ft Rockwood Roo with either of these vehicles. Can anyone tell me if this is possible or safe? The Rockwood Roo states the empty weight of the trailer is 3,070 pounds.

Thanks,
Jason

Don't know about the Windstar or Pacifica, but I'm fairly certain 3070 lbs is just beyond the smart's towing capability.

I think you could safely tow the smart with either the Windstar or the Pacifica.

Towing capacity is determined by the vehicle size, motor, transmission and brake size. You could be pushing it with both those vehicles. Once thise trailers get full of camping gear and such, they do get rather heavy.

However, they would tow a Smart nicely.

I would recommend a stabilizer hitch too. Remember that 3070 is dry weight, just like jim said once you get gear in - it'll be heavy. I've been to the point where I've weighed EVERYTHING I put in the car and trailer INCLUDING passengers. Most likely you're going to discover you may be overweight.

In addition to the stabilizer hitch, I'd think about a heavy duty transmission cooler for whatever you select to tow with too - you'll be happy you did. Now to go with that tranny cooler, next would be some synthetic transmission fluid. (of course that's just my opinion but my tranny temp gauges always showed them to run a bit cooler with the fluid)
