I spent seven hours at Roadmaster in Portland (this is the factory) having tow brackets installed (that was the easy part). They were also wiring the tail lights into the motorhome harness for me and after five hours, couldn't make it work. Something about a feedback circuit that was created when the diode pack is installed that inhibited the vehicle lighting system. They explained they would work on the problem and call me. No Charge for the work or shop time but I had to hang in the customer waiting area for seven very long hours and I still can't tow my smart.

YIKES, and this is for what? I missed the original reason Roadmaster had it...
angel - I'm really poor at topic identification myself, thanks for the help.
wiloran - Is your cabriolet equiped with auto headlights? I think that is what they had problems with? They also mentioned something about having to leave the key in the on position? How does yours work, as wiring is something I can have done anywhere!! First smart they have tried to wire. I'll post pics of the brackets as soon as I get the car back from smart center Portland. (Towed there this morning with an SRS Fault)
dancote - It will get posted here!!

Dunerunner - yes, my car has auto headlights. Here's how ours works: start the car, put it in neutral, set the brake, then turn the key to the left, it will stop about 10-20 degrees left of the on postition. That will shut off the engine (and the rain sensor auto headights feature) but leave the rear lights active.
I need to make a correction to my earlier post. Don't know what I was thinking. It wasn't Tow Master, it was Hitch Pro and Tow on 11th Avenue.
For towing ya pretty much have to have the gearbox left in NEUTRAL and ya can't remove the key from the ignition switch in that position, right? This would be normal. Yer headlamp/ wiper senser doesn't function with the key in position" 1 " anyway , right?
I'm not sure there is any actual problem with the operation of the Smart in that mode. I'm probably missing something, yet again....
