Tow Brake?

Since I'm having a difficult time finding a trailer to tow my smart on, I've been reading the threads about flat-towing. No one mentions using a tow brake. Why is that? And if you DO use a tow brake, which one?

Tow Brake?

I've been towing our Passion four down behind our class A and do not use a tow brake due to the light weight of the vehicle. At 1800 lbs, I don't notice any difference in braking or handling. We've met several RV'ers on the road with Smarts and no one was using any type of supplimental braking system.

M&G is the best but over kill for the smart. Some of the remote (wireless) units may interact with the smarts electronics. That said, it is a good idea to have a supplemental braking system should the car ever get loose and become a projectile on the highway.

yeah, i've checked them out, sure. but they're the only one (i don't count bantam since they don't have a very good website). the cost of the trailer, plus getting it to NJ, has me checking out other options.

so what would a good supplemental braking system be?

Add a Brake is going to be my choice. Only drawback is it runs off the towds battery.

Brake Buddy Vantage Select - BrakeBuddy Vantage Select | BrakeBuddy - Braking systems for motorhomes towing a vehicle

This has proportional braking, adjustable braking selected by the driver in the motorhome, and provision for break-away braking.

It is easy to set up.
I have been towing the smart without using a braking system on the car but do have this Brake Buddy which is yet to be used. A braking system is required in many localities and most require a break-away system.
Since the car is very light it doesn't need to have it's own braking when towed by a motorhome. The only reason to use one is to be legal, and to have the security of braking on long downhill stretches and if the towed vehicle breaks away from the motorhome. Reason enough, I guess.
