To deactivate the tow prevention press the security button on the row of buttons at the bottom of the dash. It's next to the "doors unlock" button. Deactivating the Tow Prevention is discussed on pages 78 & 79 in the owner manual.

tow equipment

We recently, 12/17, had a roadmaster Falcon 2 towbar and bracket 52285-1 mounted on our Smart Car and MH. We did need a 4 " lowering insert to keep the towbar near level. System included electrical spring coil, several locks, safety cables, cover and 3 hr installation for $1650 in Portland OR area. 09 manual recommeds a battery shut off switch we were not aware of until afterwards. Smart tech said he did not think it essential. We bought Smart car to be our towable car.

I just purchased a Roadmaster towing system (Falcon 2 Tow Bar #520, EZ Bracket #52285-1, Falcon 2 Combo Kit #9240, and a 6" High-Low Drop Receiver #076) off of eBay for $984.95 shipped.

I'll be spending some time between Christmas and New Years installing the brackets and wiring kit myself. Any tips or hints anyone can provide to simplify the install are much appreciated.

Also for anyone that has installed (or had installed) the wiring kit: 1) do you know if I need the optional Brake Light Relay Kit, and 2) where is the best place to splice the wiring kit into the Smart tail light system?

Thanks, Bill

Is the tow bar that Smart Car is working on different than the Blue Ox? Will it be worth the wait because it will be easier to install? I would like to get our Cabriolet ready to tow by July. The Blue Ox really seems like a pain to install from the post that I am reading. donschweika@yahoo.com

Don, Smart is no longer working on a tow bracket or tow bar. Roadmaster or Blue Ox offer both for the Smart ForTwo.

Blue Ox base plate

I am being told that if you have a smart car with fog lights that the blue ox base plate will require that the fog lights be removed. Has anyone had a installation workaround since blue ox said they must be removed for installation?
Also,
Has anyone towed the smart car for a long period of time and are you using the bungy cord on the steering wheel during transport to help stop the front end from oscillating when making turns?

Thanks,

Craig

Plastic Push Pin/Fastener Removal

What is the proper procedure for removing the plastic push pin/fasteners that are used at some locations to hold the body panels together? I don't want to damage them because I will need to use them again for reassembly.

Just pull the center pin out, you won't damage them.

My dad actually got an article from smart on how to use the existing tow hook and how to add another one on the other side (by drilling another hole) to use these with a bar as a way to flat tow. They even sent him an additional black plug to go in the other hole in the fender. Anyone else seen this from smart?
