heres the skinny..
after towing my trailer my trailer down to the laguna niguel meetup awhile back. i heard thru the grapevine how one of their employees were almost bragging how i ruined my warrentee by putting on the trailer hitch.
youd think they'ed have the courtisy to speak with me about it and not the way they did.
anyways my smart is paid for and i do just about all my own mechanical work. if it was real necessary id remove the hitch for warrenntee. even thou they'ed notice the bolt holes or wiring. im at 10,000 miles so half the miles for its gone.
so....
keep this in mind about your warrentee when installing your hitch.

Any damage or failure in the car which can be traced specifically to the aftermarket accessory will not be covered. All other aspects of the warranty are still valid.
The onus is on the dealership to demonstrate how the aftermarket accessory was the cause of the failure.
NOTE:
Note I am not a lawyer. Just some guy on the Internet.
I just have U-Haul install my hitch on Monday, and I did installed cruise controll three weeks ago, that means my warranty is gone now. Is that the true? I jush have 700 miles on mine.

If you tow something outside the engine's limits, or turn on cruise and try to surf the car by climbing out the window, then maybe. But just adding the alterations and using them within the defined limits of the car doesn't void your warranty.

Don't forget to put Bungies on the steering wheel, Unless your on a curvy roads that is.
I have a hitch on mine. I don't tow anything. The hitch is used only for winching the smart on to the bed of my truck. All that aside, I had my car in for a warranty issue (Check Engine Light) a few days ago and there was no issue with the hitch being there.
