Oh no - I'm too poor...ah...cheap. I mean...come on - I bet I'm the only Smart car owner who lives in a trailer! I'm so poor I can't afford to pay attention.

I am going to try to get my dad to buy one for his. That way I can see it. Plus it's his brother that owns the Uhaul place. Almost a shoe-in for a discount. It'll have to wait until next week though. Too much going on right now.

Tow hitch by U-Haul/Curt

So this what I do. And I have been waiting for these tow hitches for some time. At last one of the Smart owners in Phoenix went to the U-Haul Tech center in Tempe and had the thing custom made for their Smart. U-Haul then turned around and set up the design for mass marketing.

It is a solid hitch fully capable of 1000 pound towing, more than Smart is rated for --- bike rack?--100# tongue capacity including bounce capacity. We would be Very Careful and surely use bike rack straps to clip it up with.

The Euro-Version hitch a little different installation and about $400.00 more; the custom versions I've seen are around that $ as well.

How does it install? I have 2 on order for my shop in Portland,Or and will scan and send instructions off to anyone who asks. Also will sell and ship the hitch if your local U-Haul guys are unable to get it for you. Instructions claim an hour flat rate. (That usually requires some drilling or plastic removal and reinstall.) We are soon to find out..
Smart of PDX has a couple interested customers. Looking forward to the installs. Should be here by 8/08 the latest.

Best all..

BBK, can't wait to see how the U-Haul solution looks. I like the 1,000 pound towing capacity, but I hope they were still able to keep the exterior dimensions of the hitch to a minimum (yes I know about the chains). I'm still concerned about the location for cutting/trimming of the valance. Thanks!

I sent email to U-Haul and requested the installation instructions. They responded a PDF that shows the process. No mention of body mods to make room for it. There is a whole in the frame that needs to be enlarged to 1/2". Estimated install time: 30 minutes.

I also noticed that it's made by Curt, although Curt doesn't list it on thier own site.

I can't attach the PDF because the forum only allows 13k attachments. I would be happy to send a copy to others. send a private message with your email address.

Hitch instruction for the Smart..

Call the folks at CURT for the detail
Their part #11018.
800-738-7213

They will email.

A nice hitch with a rear cross round tube, curved upwards at the mounting point. No trimming needed High gloss black 1.25" tube

That cross tube under the rear bumper is also occasionally used as a skid plate and acts as a collision resistor..( L)
regards,

BBk

Probably, I mean, gosh a trailer! I wish I could afford that! I live in a spacious 800sqft 1st floor mansion.

I'm thinking more about getting the trailer hitch - just trying to justify it though. A nice custom home built trailer is sounding nice though.

At the U-Haul site, they have the Smart Fortwo listed in the 'which hitch do I need' option for cars.
"
Hitches for a 2008 Smart Fortwo

Hitch#TypeClassMax weightMax distribution weightFinishPriceDetails29132Round Tube Rec.11000N/A Black$189.95 Buy now

"
"You can't tow without these:

Hitch balls The hitch ball provides the connection point for your trailer, and comes in various sizes for different uses. Starting at: $8.95

Ball mounts The ball mount slides into your hitch receiver and holds the hitch ball that your trailer connects to. Choose the right one for your application. Starting at: $19.95"
These were extra.
