as long as you use the new neon/leds? lites on the trailer and dont go nuts with them you should be ok with just the 4 pin plug. i ran my wire from the tailite wire area and drilled down with a long drill to start fishing the wires down to secure underneath. the right side turn wire i had to bring across to the left by tapeing it down, inside the car under the rear carpet. the plug was only about $10. anyplace has the plug.
unless you want to have the wires come out thru the door. then just be careful when closing the door and should be ok.

On my other car, I keep the car wire inside and run the trailer plug under the hatch. Everything is inside when the tailgate is down.
My wires are not powered, other than from a tap into the taillight wires in the back. Haven't had any problem so far with it. Granted, I just use the regular rear lights, and a couple side-lights that come with the trailer.

I am not too worried about it. It is not like a boat trailer being backed into the watter. I might pick up some LED bulbs for the trailer though.
Bought my self powered plug aka ModuLite®, item number 118176, from trailerhitches.com. They are on sale at 28.98 and 5.00 shipping. Inclueds the 4 wire for your trailer.
