Trip report - towing a trailer long-distance

I just got back from my brother-in-law's military retirement in Norfolk, Va. My wife and I drove up last Thursday night, came back today, towing our little trailer. With luggage, et al, in the trailer, total weight, I would guess, to be about 300 to 350 lbs. Did not much hinder the smart at all, and we averaged about 41 mpg for the weekend. Coming home in high head-winds (15-20, with higher, swirling gusts) was a bit of work, but the trailer didn't negatively impact the drive. Pic is below (click for larger image):

That is good to hear. I just finished my hitch. Looking for a used topper like you have. I have the same trailer which I will redo for the smart. Right now it has oak 2x6 for floor. I plan on lightening it up some for the smart

Quite similar to my trailer which I need to add springs to. However, my box will be mounted over a frame, under the frame I will have a spare tire since I've only got 8" tires on mine.

Can't wait to get it finished, so many things to do, so little time.

Why bother with a spare for the trailer? just carry a plugging kit or some more sealant!

Or better yet, make the the trailer with 3 lugs so one spare fits both.

Most flats with trailers don't go flat just from a nail in the tire. Next time you you notice a boat trailer, utility trailer or any other type of trailer on the side of the road - look closely at that tire, most likely it had a blowout and not just a flat. #2 reason they are on the side of the road is worn bearings - a worthy investment on a trailer is a "Bearing Buddy" where you can keep those bearings full of fresh grease, Bearing Buddies shouldn't just be limited to boat trailers.

i had a chance to tow my timeout trailer around the hills in laguna niguel last sat. trailer empty weighs 345 lbs and yes it is noticable in the hills, not too bad in the flater areas. freeway no problem. im going camping in a couple weeks and getting my gear together.
