I spent about $150 on materials and it took over 40 hours to remove the interior, make templates, install everything (but not the stereo), and put the car back together. I wasn't in a hurry, and spent time putting extra material around the speaker mounts. A professional installer would do it faster, albeit somewhat less meticulously (which would not degrade the function). I would guess that labor would start around $50 an hour.

We have other cars to drive, and the smart is just not getting used much. If I have to carry more than one person, lots of stuff (which is frequently) or am traveling (frequently to D.C.), the smart sits. I don't commute, so I can't take advantage of a big benefit of the smart. I got a huge (40" x 60") roof rack last summer, but unfortunately it can't be attached to the smart. And, my kids won't drive it. Now that my daughter has her license and learned to drive a stick, she and her brother battle over our Mini (which gets 35 mpg in general driving and 40-42mpg on the highway), which is quicker, better handling, and as solid as a brick.
I'm also selling my Passat and have ordered a Golf TDI, which the rack will fit nicely on (it's an Audi rack). So it's a 2-for-1 change in cars.
