smart Center Denver Orphan List?? NOT!

My wife and I drove by the smart Center in Denver today..... and low and behold there was a Orphan parked in the front! It has a dealer add sticker with over $2000.00 in add ons, which include $998.00 for LoJack! I know I an 5th or 6th on the orphan list (at least they told me I was), and I personally know 3 people ahead of me on the list and they said they have not been called?

Looks like Denver is bypassing the list and selling it to whom ever walks in off the street! NOT WHAT WE WERE PROMISED!

Plan on calling Penske in the AM! I am surprised at Kuni!

Just walked in to my local smart dealer. There was also 2500 in add ons with lo jack and some kind of paint protection on the orphan bringing the total to 18,300. If you chose not to pick up the orphans sitting there and want to be put on the orphan list to wait for your particular model to come in. You have to cut a check for $2000.00 to be put on the waiting list. Right now there are 100 people in line who have paid a $2000.00 deposit for a available orphan when one comes available.

I too am on the orphan list at smart center Denver (not sure of where I fall on the list, I asked to be placed on it last Saturday), and am disappointed though not surprised at the orphan with the dealer add-ons. Even though smart center Denver is small, they have a lot of overhead to cover with only 15 - 20 cars ~every two weeks to sell. I know I won't accept an orphan with a $2k markup, but somebody with more money than patience will probably buy it. From what I've read on this forum, many dealers seem to think it's too much trouble (not to mention lost profits) to abide by an orphan list. I'm not sure how Penske can really enforce this.

As soon as I saw that "secret dealer advisory" thing that got leaked here I KNEW we had been had. Dealers can do pretty much what ever they want to and charge what ever they want as long as they can say it was an "orphan". Makes me wonder what incentive they have for getting a car to a reservation holder. I have asked that question here several times and... nothing...

What if you went to a real orphanage and they wanted to charge additional adoption fees for crap like this. "Jess senjor, we tatoo the social security number on the baby arm and put on a gold grill in his mouth so theese one he is more... Oh, and we have to charge for the shoe wax too cause we put that on his shoes for you..."

Just talked to the Denver dealer, the orphan add on list went from $2,700 to $3,500 with in the last week.
I'll just wait for my reservation to arrive.

I try (for all cars that I have ordered in the past) to get the VIN number during manufacture, that is co-signed to me - yes, Smart, MB, Audi, and perhaps other mfg. can do that. Once I have that info, the vehicle is less likely to be "mis-directed", "lost", etc. by the dealer to re-sell at a higher price.
