Hi Smart Friends!
Andy, Anita and Don are right: we agreed to have our next meeting August 23. I'll begin with the ritualistic, hari-kari apology: I have dropped the ball.

Sorry! My excuses are wide, varied and most persuasive (at least to me...)!
Regardless, it isn't too late. I have looked and thought and thought and looked and the ONLY activity I have come up isn't exactly a good fit. But I will present it in case someone else can figure out how to make it, um, "fly."
Saturday (and Sunday) is when the downtown airport hosts the KC Aviation Expo and Airshow. So... I intend to be there both days, to take pics of planes. But what if we all did a hot lap around the runway with jets flying overhead? Interesting juxtaposition of slow and fast, large and small, loud and quiet. Well, try as I might, I have struck out in finding a WHO to discuss this with. I can't even find a phone number! And truth be told, it's probably too late for orchestrating that anyway, given the tight schedule they must maintain.
That doesn't rule out a visit to the event, either as a drive-by (other than the caveats below) or (if lots of people want to attend) as a group activity. The only catch is A. there is essentially no parking at the airport and B. you have to take a shuttle bus to get there and C. the Broadway Bridge and Extension will both be closed from 9-6, as they really don't want anyone to drive a car there. Doh!
I'm stumped. I am also committed to attend the show, so it's possible that you will have to play this hand without me! AWWWWWW!
On a personal note, I will be on vacation the following weekend, attending the 27th Large and Dangerous Rocket Ships (LDRS, and no, we're not affiliated with any church!) Launch in Argonia Kansas. It is the annual BIG launch for all of Amateur Rocketry. The club I fly with (Kloudbusters) is hosting this 6-day launch, and I'm gonna be busy! The tie in to OUR group here in KC is simple: if you want to take a road-trip, let me invite EVERYONE to come see some amazing people do some amazing things with rockets. I'm not talking little toy Estes rockets: I'm talking big stuff that will fly right into and THROUGH commercial airspace (25,000, 35,000, all the way to 50,000 feet). Fire, thunder, unbelievable power! The bad news: Argonia is 3-4 hours SW of Kansas City. The good news: it is the Labor Day weekend, it is completely free, and I personally guarantee you'll enjoy it! Saturday would be the best day to attend, with Sunday being next best. Launches happen from 9 - 5 both days. Info at ldrs27.org.
Wow, I didn't intend for this to become a plug, but it did... Sorry! My point is this: if you want a really cool destination for a looooooong drive, I humbly offer the launch.
Back to our meeting / activity, I've got nothing. Anybody got any other ideas? I will be available after 5pm both days in case someone comes up with a night-cruise or something.
One last thing: on any Friday in mid August for the past 20 years, we COULD HAVE been in the Annual Elvis Parade. But Entercom Broadcasting killed 99.7-KY (the station that created and sponsored it), and no other station wanted to step up and put it on. I had been growing sideburns since June just in case, but alas, no parade.

Maybe next year. FWIW, I had an idea for our club that would have most likely WON the parade contest and would have subsequently funded our club for the next year: we would have had our cars in the parade, each with Elvis sideburns of faux fur on the lower Tridion. Would have netted our club $500. $#%&!!! Again, maybe next year.
Anyone have any ideas for an August Activity?
Thanks for wading through this manuscript!
