Does anyone know if there are any kind of plans to produce a diesel Smart? I see more & more Smart cars on the road these days.

haha, nobody and I mean nobody knows. If they say they do then SmartUSA will point the laser beam in the sky and vaporize them. Here is what European car companies picture Americans when they hear the word diesel.

I'd love to have one. Diesel is cheaper than regular unleaded here in CT by a dime at the station down the street. I forget how many months ago but it was $1.50 more than regular unleaded per gallon when gas got expensive. It was rather pricey 9 months I think...right around the time the Jetta Diesel became available...I'll refrain from complaining about the tail light design, etc. But even at it's priciest, it the balance between better gas mileage and price has always been in your favor.

VW is coming out with a Golf TDI that is suppose to be here soon. It's tempting me. Although these MR2, turbo kits and busa engines are tempting me, too.

Nobody knows, so this thread is only going to be a thread of speculation. If I were to speculate, I'd say we will see the car that turns off when you stop (it really shouldn't be called a hybrid, even a micro-hybrid). All it does is turn off when you are stopped, which means the A/C stops pumping cold air. But I'd still buy a micro-hybrid Smart, I rented a 2009 mHD for 10 days in Europe and overall I like the option (you can turn it on and off which is nice).

But I'd rather have a diesel Smart than a mHD. I'd pay a little more for a diesel to get that ridiculously great MPG and miles per tank and engine longevity.

I guess your question is more like " Are they going to import diesel smarts to USA" as they have allways made a diesel smart for sale in the rest of the world. US laws are too strict to allow diesel smart in. Thats why you see very few diesels of any kind in USA. Diesels of all kinds are popular all over europe.

Actually, Dave Schembri addressed the diesel question at the Wisconsin Dells rally. No smart diesel as in the EU for the USA; too underpowered and doesn't meet EPA standards. However, he did say the subject of a turbo diesel engine with adequate power for the USA is under discussion. Basically a concept at this point and like everything else the business model (translate as money) would have to work. Because of the price premium, the program might involve potential owners committing to a car and when enough had signed up smart would make a small production run of those cars. Again, all of this is just a concept at this point - nothing even close to firm. Great timing on the discussion in Wisconsin because he left the smart rally to catch a flight to Germany for the big world powwow where all the regional smart distributors wheel and deal with Dr. Z.

Hard to figure the rap against the Euro turbo diesel (emissions is a different thing) unless it is the marketing problem that ultimate advertised horsepower is the number that supposidly defines performance. Ultimate horsepower is rarely used; it is torque (from which HP is derived) that is the true measure of an engine’s ability. The current M-B OM660, 800cc turbo diesel has 20% more torque than our Mitsu M132 (3B21), 999cc gasser.

Have not the last six Le Mans 24 Hours been overwhelmingly won by diesels, to the point that now the ACO is tweeking the rules for 2010 to penalize the diesels by adding ballast and restricting refueling system orifices?

Perhaps all that needs be done to the smart diesel is to modify the transmission ratios and shift points, presuming they can devise an effective, reliable emissions system that will fit in the car. And, educate the public that ultimate HP is not all that it is made out to be.

Still can't understand why the diesel car hasn't taken off in the US. The Smart diesel is a bit of a non-runner. The engine really is only useful if you never go above 30 mph, that's why I went for the 1 litre turbo petrol version. I also own a VW Golf GTTDI - it's the same as the standard golf but with a 150 bhp turbo diesel with 6-speed box. And yes, the petrol GTI will beat it from the lights, but once you reach 50 mph, the diesel runs away - the torque is phenominal! It does about 50 miles per (UK) gallon at a steady 70 mph (and 2,000 rpm).

If you do look at the Golf TDI, then make sure it's the "PD" version - very high-pressure injectors - they really make it fly.

There are some individulals who are bringing in 450 diesels from Canada for their own use and getting them plated for use in the US

BTW smart - If I was worried about power, I certianly would not be driving a smart but there would be a 2010 Challemger RT in my driveway duhhhh

Diesel in OK has historically cost 75c less than unleaded. When the price gouging started a couple years ago diesel shot up to 80c more than unleaded. Right now they are about the same. I don't trust the market to buy anything diesel right now. Plus it'd be significantly heavier and costly. When's that hydrogen car coming?

When you fill up with hydrogen, does the car get lighter?
