I just got off the phone with smartcenter SF and they are looking at our site today. I will also be sending them photos of the kit on a smart tomorrow after I get done in Seattle.
They came off with the statement 'We need to drill the holes to install the plate on the car by CA Law.'
I told them CA law states 'The front license plate must installed on the front of the vehicle, clear visiable.' This is the case in all states that require front license plates. They do not require them on center. I explained the our kit installs to the tow hook and clearly meets all aspects of the law. They only have to install the plate. If it were me I would tell them not to drill my bumper and that I have an legal way to display the front plate. Then if I went in with my kit and they had drilled the bumper they would be replacing the bumper. I have had to deal with this before. This is why we make the kit.
Dave, have you reached out to Ethan Smith at smart center Seattle. He sounds like a great guy and would likely work with you on it... but i think you have already covered this ;)

Ethen is the GM and I am meeting him tomorrow. BJ the parts manager helped us with the fitment and provided us the test car on Monday. Both are great and I think we will have a working relationship with them.
They could be afraid of liability issues (what issues, I don't know of, but who knows). It's a very common thing with turning off air-bags. If you're of a certain height or smaller, you can legally have your airbags disabled, because it's more dangerous than not having them - but very few places will actually do it, because they're afraid of lawsuits. It's not an excuse, but it might be where they're coming from.
I just got my "no holes license plate mount" kit today, Looks so simple a cave man could do it. My car won't be here for a bit(#1197) but I plan to take the kit to the dealer soon and make sure that it is put in writing some where that no holes are to be drilled, and I will be responsible for the placementof the front plate.

Thats a great idea... I plan on communicating the same messaging to my dealer!
Went to the dealer today. She sat down and entered my name, phone ...etc and the "no drill" request. I also showed her the kit and where/how it is used.Another guy was there picking up his Smart and wanted to know where I got it and I gave him the website. The dealer was impressed with this and is going to see if they can offer it. I'm sure there will be a price but I'm glad I've got mine.
