Just for the record I like it... and will seriously consider getting one when my car arrives. I have to ask, however, about the price ($50). Looking at the photos it seems like a simple metal bracket on an oversized screw. I'm no expert in this, but would think something like this would cost considerably less. Am I missing something?

Yes,
As a back and front yard mechanic, the time it would take for me to machine the stud (different threads on each end of hexagon shaft) and to bend the proper angles on the cross bracket with a brake and dress the ends with a grinder, make the $50 a bargain. Finding stainless metal stock at your local home depot is also a pain.
Vlad92, The cost is in line with the work involved to create, as stated the bolt is a custom pitch thread and must be machined. Each bracket is stainless steel and bent to the design of the car. If it could be offered at a lower price we would. We pride ourselves on keeping cost down and providing a quality product.
I'm late coming in to the thread. Are you all saying that Smarts don't come with a tag holder in the front? It's a law in Virginia also to have both plates.

Smarts come with a tag holder that the dealer mounts by drilling holes in the skin of the front bumper. Our product offer people a solution that does not require the drilling of holes. Also, some people are saying it covers up the belly button on the bumper.

Dave has offered the option of a group buy on these which will reduce the price. No one has taken his offer at this point; if the price is a big deal then let's put a group buy together and reduce the price that way. If not, it's $50 bucks each and as lhoboy said, you'd be hard pressed to DIY and keep it at that price.
nice to see a dealer that actually has an interest in what their buyers may like. unlike the clowns in SF.
Agreed. If the car comes from the factory without being drilled, then I would like the option to attach the front plate however I'd like. I've never had luck getting a California dealer to not drill the front bumper and it looks like smart Center SF is not going to be the exception.
I would do a group buy, but 1) I do not need a front plate in AZ and 2) by the time you picked it up and sent it to me I would most likely still spend $50.

I don't know if this is absolutely correct, but the Seattle dealer is saying they've been told NOT to drill the front bumper.
