I doubt that the Contis would have made a difference nor would the Smart in the same scenario. If you did to the Smart with what they did to the VW, I'm sure the Smart would be stuck too.
I'm in Lakeville and drove on the stocks for two week in ice/snow. I will be the first to tell you the stock tires on this car is average at best. Sure you can get around only if you drive super slow. But the tires itself was nothing special. I would never replace these tires with the same tires again.
I'm still amazed when people say that stock are 'fine' in snow. Are you driving the same car as me? Do we have the same tires? Are we driving on the same snow?
I can't tell you how many times I would be SOL if I drove on Contis during the last 2-3 weeks. I would venture to guess that the Smart would have been grounded in the garage 30% of the time.
With Blizzaks on, the car goes. Snow, sleet, ice, or slush.....I'm driving.
