I know there's a personalized plate thread already, but are all of the Indiana smarties aware that the Indiana BMV will allow you to reserve personalized plates on its website now (
www.in.gov/bmv)? I didn't realize that it was available until recently. They even give you a preview of what your plate will look like.
It's $48 to reserve a personalized plate that will be available in January of '09. The one catch is that you must reserve it for an existing vehicle — unfortunately not for that smart you're still waiting on! You can reserve the plate for any car you already have registered, though, and transfer it later when you get your smart. (If you want to reserve a plate for a vehicle you don't yet own, you'll have to visit a branch of the BMV.)
You'll need to create a "myBMV" account to do the online stuff, but it's easy enough to do. With this account you can not only reserve personalized plates, you can do most things that would normally take a trip to a branch office; the main exception being to renew a driver's license.
Of course, I've reserved a personalized plate for my smart
