New Potential Smart owner

Hey everyone, I'm new to the forum because I'm currently thinking about buying my first new car, and I'd love for it to be a Smart car.

I went to SCI for the first time this weekend, but they were really busy and I didn't get to talk to anyone for very long, but Walter told me he could get a bare-bones Pure ASAP with no wait. I'm thinking about doing this because 1) I don't want to wait a year and 2) I don't want to pay for an expensive orphan.

Does anyone have a Pure? From scanning the forums it seems like most people get passions and cabriolets. Personally I can do without AC because all of my hand-me-down cars have all been without it.

Anyway, just wanted to introduce myself, hopefully I'll be an official member soon!

I have two passions but my sister-in-law has a pure reserved. I think the pure without any options will probably last longer than any of the other ones, less trouble also.

Welcome aboard. The cost for an orphan is no different than the cost for a car you would order. It all depends on the options on the car. So, since the orphans are cars that were not picked up, then it would depend on what that person had ordered. I bought an orphan after waiting for a year. My car was not going to be delivered for another 8 months. There is no car made that is more fun to drive and more of an attention getter. I have been driving for 40 years and have never had a better time. Let the fun begin.

Yes, I have a pure & I like it better than the passion. I didn't want the shift paddles on the steering wheel, I liked the interior fabric on the pure better than the options on the passion, & I don't care about the wheel covers or the panoramic roof. So, I would have been paying for things I didn't want or didn't care about.

The only passion equipment that I would have liked are the radio, the remote adjustment for the heated side mirrors, & power windows. I decided that I could live with manual windows & without the remote adjustment & heated side mirrors. I added a radio. My pure was an orphan with A/C already included - something which I could take it or leave it. So, it was okay with me to take it. I'm glad I have the A/C because defrosting works better in the winter with the A/C as part of the mix.

It's more expensive to add things like the radio & A/C at the dealership than at the factory, but the price is something that you can negotiate - so negotiate hard & shop around until you get a dealer who will meet your price. I've seen smart radios 9 & 10 for sale on ebay at great prices, so if you can't get a good price on the radio from a dealer, you might want to consider buying on ebay. The dealer price for my radio was $400 (normally a $350 option from the factory), but $400 was down from around $600. Unfortunately A/C is harder to come by after market. I'd recommend shopping around until you find a pure orphan that already has A/C. The interior of the smart is a small space & it can fog up quickly without A/C.

Good luck with your purchase.

Check around the different dealers and get on their orphan list - you might find something other than a Pure. (Some list their inventory on the www.) I lucked out and got a loaded Passion just 7 days ago - has more features than my top end Linc Cont. And I've only found out about the in February. Couldn't be happier with my choice and the help on this forum.

Talk with them on the weekdays rather than the weekend if you want service. Most smart centers will give you plenty of undevided attention on the weekdays.
