Adding or subtracting data to or from the hard disk has no effect on the weight of the drive. If someone believes otherwise, prove me wrong. I agree with the following:

Magnetic information on the disk consists of a stream of (very, very small) magnetic fields. As you know, a magnet has two poles, north and south, and magnetic energy (called flux) flows from the north pole to the south pole. Information is stored on the hard disk by encoding information into a series of magnetic fields. This is done by placing the magnetic fields in one of two polarities: either so the north pole arrives before the south pole as the disk spins (N-S), or so the south pole arrives before the north (S-N)
Adding more bit patterns to a hard drive does not add additional weight.
This whole thread is about a joke posted on another forum. We were making fun of the joke and acted as it data had weight.

As long as you say that a binary "1" has the exact same weight as a binary "0", you could take the weight of any drive / the capacity of the drive / 8 bits to the byte to get the "Weight" of each bit. It's technically correct, but 100% useless information, other than to joke about it.

Just don't let out the blue smoke! Everyone knows that computers run on blue smoke and they quit working when you let it out!

And, if you unplug a network cable, you better get the bit bucket to catch all those packets before they end up all over the floor...

For more humor along these lines, check out a book called "Welcome to I.T." published by CDW. It has a good compilation of user vs. technology stories submitted for their Fred contest. I have several stories in the book which means that I've been working in the technology field too long...
