Cleanable Oil Filters

thanks to Mx(racoongotmysmart)man for reminding me about it...hes install looks good...is a tad longer than stock but if you run over something that actually hits the guard shell you'll better be checking things out at front too...know what I mean Vern!

I have one of the high performance oil filters on my Triumph Bonnie and have been very impressed with how well it is made. A first class piece of work. Any idea which one fits the Smart?
Thanks,
Dan

This is a great idea but for the price. At $20/filter, the $200 price tag equates to 10 standard filters, for 110,000 miles. Would not the filter outlast the vehicle? Yes. Would the vehicle make the part cost-effective? Not sure. 110K is a lot on this engine. Now, if one were to clean more often, then it might be a viable option. Don't want to start an oil change interval flame here, but ...

...that's the point of this thread...will you pay for it?
...now you can always sell the car and keep the filter for later use..
..lots of people like to run their oil to mfg reccomended intervals but change the filter in between calls, and this is the ticket...
...the Pure Power is $$$ but the other sites show anything from 60's to 150's $

JetFuel, I'd like to see invention of a universal filter. Make it a bypass whose adapter fits the OEM connection. Then, the oil is diverted to and filtered by a universal filter that exceeds all knows specs. That there are a small number of filter sizes (e.g., for an F350 diesel vs a Smart) should reduce overall cost and clean up the landfills. I look at this mechanism like a coffee filter: Use and dispose, or use and clean. Which is better? Dunno.

Doesn't this fall under the "Pretty things that are largely useless" category? That fine billet aluminum will look like an expensive garbage can after 10000 miles under the car. Not in my budget.

I wouldn't consider it a money-saving device so much as a performance improvement. If the service interval is aggressive at twice per year, you're looking at 5 year return on investment. I'd probably get one of these just so the oil would be cleaner longer, especially if cleaning the filter every 3k miles makes a difference.

And, anything to get cold oil to the engine faster is a good thing.

To MRC59,

AMSIOL has marketed just what you are suggesting for years. I have used a remote bypass filter / full flow filter attachment on my F-150 for years and enjoy the ease of filter replacement and extreme filtering it provides. I have also used their bypass filter kits on several other vehicles with great success. I believe extreme filtering is the best possible insurance for and engine. Dan Hall

Any idea what the Smart's oil filter thread size is? Believe I saw something here indicating it was 20x1.5 Can someone confirm this? If this is correct, the P&K stainless filter part number would be an S1.
Thanks,
Dan Hall
