Coming Soon (January 2010) Mobile DTV
I read a lot of the industrial Trade Publications and it looks like the new Mobil DTV is on track for new products for January CES. Likely you'll hear a lot about it in January.
Unlike regular DTV, Mobil DTV is far more robust and works in areas and conditions where regular DTV would never work. The catch is that the resolution is much lower and the data rate is a lot lower than DTV. It's going to be 416h x 240v resolution and likely to have around a 500 kbps data rate.
The exact data rate can vary, so it could be higher (like 900 kbps) or lower (like 300 kbps), depending on how much bandwidth the broadcaster wants to throw at this service. Also, because it's more robust, the data takes 4 times the bandwidth of the regular broadcasting data stream. So that 500 kbps, translates into 2 Mbps of the 19.39 Mbps DTV data stream.
Most manufacturers are being tight lipped as to the products they will offer at CES, but many expect to see cell phones with Mobil DTV support, small mobile DTVs, computers with built-in mobile DTV, and USB add-ons for computers to receive mobile DTV.
Some programming will be free, but some programming with be a pay service. There's a major unknown as to the types of programming people will want to see on mobile DTV.
This could be the next big thing .... or the next big failure... time will tell.
