Garmin GPS units offer MSN Direct

Not a Garmin owner, no connection to the company, etc. but thought this was interesting. Several Garmin GPS units offer MSN Direct [a fee service], which will give you access to real time info including local gas prices. Once you select a gas station, the unit will route you to it.

MSN Direct

I have a couple of Sprint phones and use MSN Live Search Mobile to find gas prices, pizza, movie times, weather, etc. It works with most phones that have data plans with either a BT GPS unit, phone-based AGPS, or by inputting an address or zip code. It's free except for any data charges on the phone itself. Here's a link - Live Search Mobile. Enjoy!

Unfortunately it looks better on paper than it works in real life. From what I've read this is dependent on where a person is using the unit. Nice idea though if they can work out the kinks.

I have the Nuvi 680 and use it in the Twin Cities... It really does work pretty well in metro areas... We used it on a road trip to Denver... Couldn't really tell if it was continuing to update along the way, but it for sure updated all the Denver based information when we got within about 60 miles of Denver. The traffic information has come in handy several times... though once it claimed that I-35W was still closed for construction on the south end of Mpls but we hadn't heard about the closure and it was in fact open. So sometimes the information may not be completely up to date, but it's proven to be more helpful than not. The 780 would be another good option which I may upgrade to... we'll see...
