Internet Connection Speed

It seems that I've accidentally made a double thread out of the MagicJack thread so I request that those post be merged to this thread.

Anywho, I found out that my technology challenged parents had ordered the slowest internet connection speed possible. So realising that their mistake had made the house's internet connected devices (5) dreadfully slow they've upgraded to a new 18 mega-bit connection from AT&T...And since my parents are attempting to open a new business, they got a discount...

So before I leave the world of DSL and re-enter the world of fiber with more speed than I've ever had before, I'll give one last speed test.

While we are at it, I'm running DSL as about as fast as my area allows. The next setp up gets expensive and I'm still going through tough times....

Why is it the US, supposedly one of the most technologically advanced countries in the world, has the crappiest private Internet* and cell phone systems?

US ranking: US ranks 28th in Internet connection speed: report
