Whether one is a motorhead, ecodriver, hypermiler or just plain penny-pincher, a ScanGaugeII looks like the ultimate accessory for the smart driver. How many folks have used one of these, and can you talk about how it has improved your mileage and maintenance? Where the best place to mount the display in the 2008 smart? Photos of how you installed your unit on the dash would be great to see.

There's an enormous amount of information about the Scangauge on the major Canadian smart forum: http://www.clubsmartcar.ca
I have one, but it is a little bit slow. It refreshes the display about every second. I like it because you can diagnose the carcodes when they occur. I have mine set up to read MPH RPM Water temp and MPG.
The display has a bunch od colors you can change it to.
ECU(engine control unit), OBD(on-board diagnostic)
the ability to display engine check codes was a concern of mine six months ago. At that time, not having a reader, I was prepared to purchase a reader/gage. These things aint cheap (the readers), even the most basic ones that don't show much more than the trouble code, ugh!
Anyways, I discovered Autozone was one of a number of places that would check the code for free which was good enough at the time. Still, I've been on the lookout for an inexpensive reader.
But if I had to spend a few extra $$$, the above mentioned ScanGaugeII and X-gauge catch my interest.
I e-mailed the X-Gauge people today to ask them if they made a unit that would fit the new USA 2008 Smart 451. Here is their response.
"Starting with model year 2007, Smart has changed to a newly mandated OBD
protocol (CAN Bus) that the X-Gauge has not implemented. In addition, the
clock pod itself is different and most likely will not accommodate the PCB
of the X-Gauge anymore. All these changes would require major hardware and
software modifications with significant monetary and time investments. In
addition I do not own one of these new smarts so I would not have easy
access to a car for testing. Being in a small niche market, the X-Gauge does
not sell like hot cakes so there is hardly any profit to be made. I'm
actually still contemplating if it should do a re-design of the X-Gauge or
not."
