Shelf car sunshade generates solar power

Here is a shade for a car that is a solar panel.

If it was used on a Smart car, it would give another reason to have people ask if it is electric?

That design looks more like a hazard to me. One gust of wind and that thing will be trashing every other car in the lot.

Having the wind bounce it around on top of the car might not be too good for the paint job either. Perhaps it is a prototype and the finished product will have a way to secure it better?

The article says it is a prototype design. It folds into the rear wing and is for use when the vehicle is parked. I would think they would make it into some type of cover that would extend down the sides keeping the wind from getting under it. Of course most people would not extend it on windy days, or park where the wind would not have any effect on it.

Seems like it would be an easy take at "Midnight Auto"

I have a flexible solar panel that I throw on top of my 1963 Airstream Bambi and hook directly to the 12-volt battery. I've stayed at the beach in Baja for weeks with no other power. It stayed on fine once in a tornado in Georgia, but it also fit much closer to the trailer than this does. - sheureka

Interesting idea, but that many solar panels would add up to several thousand dollars.
