I never set out to be a Sony fan. But, when I'm shopping for such&such a doodad and there's a selection of brands on the shelf, it is often Sony's which captures my senses. Time and again, I get home and say to myself, "self, you bought something else from Sony!"
Things rarely go wrong, but when they do go wrong: from my experience, attempting to get repairs made in or out of warranty is an exercise in frustration.
And yet, I continue to buy Sony products. They make good 'stuff'. Years ago, when they first came out with the Vaio line, I even had a Vaio desktop, and loved it. But, my netbook is HP. No problems with it so far.
My issues:
SONY Notebook GRZ610 came with a defective memory slot and I realized this after the warranty. So the remaining slot is used with 500MB maximum and that affects its performance. The left hinge broke and I ended up with little setscrews and misc. parts.
It's one thing electronically, but a mechanical failure for such an expensive computer is just adding insult to injury.
Then we bought a 60" SONY projection LCD tv. It's past the warranty and it now displays blue corners and many blue spots in the middle. All models from the smaller to the larges 73" share the same defective optical engine This repair costs about $1500 and no one will guarantee a better component will be used. I haven't even contacted SONY because many people got shafted by them and lied to on forums that I've read, that I won't bother.
So...I just had to vent on this lack of support. Let me tell you about my $131 bill for talking to Germany for 41 minutes using VERIZON...I'm usually sharp but they won't budge on that one. Why...because I just have long distance domestically and did not catch that. They nailed me with 1975 long distance prices these crooks.
I agree with you, to me they're just oversized smartphones that don't make calls.
Just saw this Nokia netbook video and thought of this thread. If Nokia wants to get into netbooks, there must be a market for both smartphones and netbooks.

I've currently got a Sony TZ150, which is about my 6th or 7th Sony VAIO. Whenever I go shopping, it seems they're the only people making a laptop with the features I want most (small size, lots of features, built-in optical drive). I'm the list admin for a Sony laptop list, so I know how bad it gets when someone goes wrong, but that's actually pretty rare. The VAIO line is one of the top laptop brands in terms of reliability - but apparently when you have a problem they really suck. So far, I've never had a Sony laptop break on me... except the one I dropped. My insurance company covered that one, though they found it nuts - Sony wanted more for a new display than I paid for the entire laptop less than a month before.
I wanted a netbook for the portability and to take advantage of the near-ubiquitous availability of Wi-Fi these days. I just didn't want to pay nearly as much for it as a full-featured laptop. So I went to buy.com and found a refurbished EeePC for $250 delivered. It's got a beautiful 10.1" screen, a 160 GB HDD, speakers, webcam and a decently sized keyboard. I threw in a 2 GB stick of RAM I had laying around and a $29 WIN7 Home Premium upgrade and I'm thrilled with it.
I got my wife a Toshiba netbook last week as her old netbook running Linux died. Does she like it? I dunno but I did notice it hasn't moved for the last week. Why? Windows 7 isn't compatible with our aircard.
I have Liliputing is a great source for netbooks and other similar size computers. I also started a Yahoo Group for netbook pc's.
My idea for the ideal netbook.

I have read that Win 7 might have the same problems as Vista - compatibility problems.
